New 5th Wheel price

What do you pay for a new RV. We are looking at getting a 2018 5th wheel. There is a good chance that the dealer will have to have the factory make it for us. We will pay cash which means it won't be sitting on their lot for a period of time. What is the % off of MSRP that we should look for?

I'm on my second RV. The first I special ordered and just got the standard 30% off MSRP. We bought our 5th wheel this year in January and bought last year's model which dealer was anxious to move off the lot so I got my best deal. I got the price about $24K below what it lists for during the year. Waiting until end of the year for closeouts on 2017 models can save you lots of $$$.

First of all, cash isn't king. They don't want your cash. They want you to finance.
Second if you order one you can't get (at least I can't at my dealer) as good of a discount as if you buy one off of the lot. They tell me that when they buy them one at a time it costs them more per unit than to order several at once. I am not sure if this is true or not.

I've talked to a couple RVers who ordered new FWs, but had no timeframe. They simply told the dealer to place the order with a "stock" order. Helped the dealer get a better price since there was a quantity order. This is one of the major problems with the RV industry as a whole; ZERO dealer networking, like in the car business. The mfrs keep pushing the "buy local" b.s., yet they won't force their dealers into a network where they can buy and sell amongst themselves to make a sale.

As for financing, if you can get an X-months same as cash deal for a cheaper price, just pay it off when the "deal" expires. Let the cash ride in an investment account and make a few bucks in the mean time. :B Either that, or, if there's no pre-payment penalty, pay it off after the minimum number of payments. Had a friend do this...

Another point I'd make is that we would not buy in a big buyers market in spring or early summer. We like to sell our old unit in spring and then buy new in November of December in a cold weather state. For example, no RV's are moving in Michigan in early December so that's where and when we buy. We also go to a larger dealer so they have some cushion in the prices they pay since they sell so many. My dealer is the largest purchaser of RV's in the U.S. with seven dealerships. So they save by buying in quantity, and their shipping is inexpensive since they';re a couple hours from northern Indiana where the factories are. We study the floor plan we want, then identify the make and model number and search for that vigorously online. Then we let the dealers quote against each other. We bought a 2014 Rockwood Signature in December,2015 for about 40% off list price. We have it serviced locally here in PA most of the times but for something big I'd likely go back to Michigan, even though it's a full day's trip. Dealers will try to make a buck on you any way they can, even if they're your local dealer.

Careful with that. When you have the dealer order from the factory when that particular units shows up......thats your unit. If it arrives and is a hastily assembled POS then that opens up a whole can of worms. First off its probably going to take between 6 to 10 weeks or longer. If it arrives, is built like ****, and you decide not to accept it, then you are at square one. Either let them attempt repairs before you own it, or reject it and start over by having them order another from the factory essentially resetting the clock. Believe me it can happen.

It is much better to find an "in stock" unit on the lot where you can go over it with a fine tooth comb before committing.

Another title for this post could be "How it took 8 months to buy a new trailer" LOL!

P.S. If you do have a dealer order from the factory they are most likely going to want some type of deposit. Make sure its refundable should the above happen and make sure you get that in writing signed off on by the general manager or owner, not the salesman.

Don't be afraid to special order, to get the exact unit you want. In the colors you want, equipped the way you want.
You will have an opportunity to inspect a factory ordered unit

Cash is king. Start at 35% off and work up to 25-30%. And Ralph Cramden, you can(should) go over any umit with a fine tooth comb. Our PDI on an ordered unit took over 3 hours and we found 13 problems, 7 if which were big items. You don't sign accepting the unit till you're satisfied.

The local dealer wouldn't come down to more than 23% off MSRP. So I drove 300 miles and ended up at 29% off MSRP, which I was really more than that because they added Maxx air vents, air bags, a turnover ball, and Anderson hitch in with that, so I was over 30% off just looking at the base fifth wheel.

Look at RV trader and search nationally for the fifth wheel you want and you'll find the dealers that are willing to work. A different local dealer of FR products just built a huge new shop so they are more than happy to take on warranty work. They sell the brand I bought but only had one on the lot, and it was bumper pull. I just explained that and they did a great job with the first go round of warranty repairs.

Kz service department will steer you to a servicing dealer if you are 150 miles away from your servicing dealer an not put you to the back of the line ...

When we bought are G284FLT 5th wheel we got 30 percent off MSRP plus a number of perks like a new MorRyde king 20k box, upgraded TV antenna an winterized free of charge since we bought in January an the dealer had De-winterized the unit to shows us everything worked an had no leaks ...

Are unit with all the bells an whistles was listed at 95K MSRP we bought it a 62K out the door 🙂

Safe travels

KZ will also not hassle you with using a mobile repair outfit at any time. I called the factory and asked, as there is only 1 KZ dealer in the entire state of AZ.

30% off the MFG's MSRP, not the dealers inflated MSRP

This is why Jayco's web site should be the model for all RV mfrs, whether you like Jayco, or not. You can build and price the exact rig you want and see a mfr's MSRP, not some number that a stealer pulled from his nether region. Too many times I've seen identical units a few hundred miles apart have an "MSRP" that's thousands different. They blame it on things like "delivery" and "documentation". Total b.s.!

Don't discount the fact that a dealer's lender might have some incentive programs going to get you to finance. A guy at our church bought an =expensive= TT from Camping World in Mesa (MSRP ~$100k) and wanted to pay cash. They'd give him little to no discount unless he financed. Deal was 12 months same as cash. He thought this was a dumb-as-rocks "incentive" on their part (who wouldn't want a pile of cash to restock inventory NOW?), so took it so he could get a discount. After having it in the shop about 3 of the first 4 months he owned it (joking that he loved his "covered parking", since they kept it in the shop so much), he found out that there was no pre-payment penalty after 4 months, so he wrote them a check and paid it off. CW was pissed when they found out he did this and, when they started hassling him about warranty repairs, he showed them that he had deeper pockets than they wanted to mess with and they stopped. Story I heard was that he showed up "shopping" with his attorney in tow and made a point to be introduced to the GM to "explain" things. :B

Google the particular model you are looking at and see dealer prices nationwide. You will find similar/same models with MSRPs that vary a lot, and prices that vary even more. Find the lowest price you can and use that as a bargaining tool if your dealer is significantly higher. Many times you will see MSRP, "our price", and call for "our lowest price" all on the same page.
