New Norcold fridge and burning smell

Hey guys I'm camping in my brand new Sundance XLT245 for the first time and I have a burning smell I have tracked down to the fridge. The fridge is running on propane and seems to be working properly. The smell seems to come and go, probably when the fridge fires up. I am thinking this might just be a new fridge thing (hoping at least). Smells kinda like when a furnace fires up for the first time in a while. Thoughts?

  • The smell seems to have subsided. I figured it was simply burn off, but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. I also figured out the bathroom ceiling vent is right next to the fridge vent, so I think I was getting a little smell coming in from the vents.
  • They coat area's of the burner area and chimney with vegetable oil to keep them from rusting. It takes time to burn off.
  • I agree that frequently gas appliances will have an off-gassing phase the first few times they get fired up. Usually I run my HW tank, oven, fridge and especially furnace for a few hours in the driveway with doors/windows open before first trip.

I would remove the fridge vent outside the rig and ensure all looks well and there is no obvious construction debris actually smoldering. Also test all your LP detector, CO detector etc. If the smell persists more than a few hours with good ventilation then I would seriously wonder if there is a problem with the unit.

  • If this is the first time you have used it, it is probably just the residual manufacturing oils on the metal in the burner tube....

I'll bet if you fire up the furnace, you will smell that too.

But, it's curious that the dealer didn't fire up and test all the systems before you took delivery and that should have already burned off this.

I'd not leave the unit and watch it closely for a couple of hours or more.
