I am new to this, and am thinking to get a fifth wheel in the near future.

Is it Ok to use it UNHITCH during an overnight stay?

Many thanks as always

It's perfectly fine to leave it hitched up for an overnight. Although probably not necessary, I lower the landing jacks just enough to take some of the weight off the truck and stabilize the unit a little. If I must unhitch for some reason, leaving the fiver unattended in a place other than an RV park I place a hitch lock on the kingpin to help prevent theft of the unit.

Generally speaking if I'm going from a to b and need a layover. We either eat on the way in or cook at the cg. Leave it all connected and just throw down the rear jacks. The less we do means less to do in the morning when leaving.

Hope he remembers to unhook his power cord from his truck o/n. If he does a walk around as he should every time he will see his legs down and see his plug is undone.

Under normal circumstances, we do not unhook when stopping at WM or a travel center for the night. I works for us. On occasion we need to unhook for a very short period of time to grab a bite to eat, etc but when we are back, we hook back up again. Hugs, Di

I know the OP is happy with these answers and has ended the thread. I'm chiming in late.

My first 5er was a 1994 21'6" Jayco. Other then the fact that it was small inside it had no storage for stuff. I immediately moved up to a 27'6" prowler. It had one slide and storage.

If you don't need storage space then a small 5er will be fine.

It is ok to leave the 5th wheel hitched to the truck and spend the night in it.

The shortest manufactured 5th wheel I've seen is 18 feet. That was in the 80's.
You'll need to look at manufacturer or dealer websites to see what is available.

Sorry if I do not make it clear, I mean to sleep on it for the night without UNHITCH the unit for one night stop over.

BTW, what is the shortest 5th wheel on the market these days?

Many thanks again

If it is just a quick overnight stop then sometimes we don't bother to unhitch. Unit will move a bit while we are walking inside, but that's not a problem once we are in bed. If we want to put the front jacks down, then we go ahead and unhitch so that we won't make the mistake of driving away with jacks still down.

What do you "use it UNHITCH"?

The reason for your question is unclear to me.

Are you asking if it's OK to unhitch it, and leave it at a truck stop or Walmart?? As a rule, I'd say "no" - but you do what you have to do ๐Ÿ˜‰ Otherwise, if you're at an RV park - sure, unhitch it if you want. Only takes a few minutes to set up.
