Question about special orders

Anyone here know how special orders work between dealers and the factory? Is it similar to the car industry where the factory gives a certain amount and scheduled allocations to the dealer, or is it first come, first served with new orders submitted to the factory?

Looking at ordering a new Jayco soon and wondering about timing of delivery for the season. I figure our perfect window to avoid start paying for the unit while we are not using it, while also leaving time for any inevitable warranty work, would be late March, early April delivery, not Feb which is what the dealer is saying an order put in now would result in.

Every manufacturer is different. We ordered our unit in February and the next run of fivers that weren't sold was the end of July.

I ordered my unit a Christmas time. Dealership was very slow and welcomed the cash flow. My unit arrived 30 days later.
For me it worked out well. Factory is slower as well so units are not as rushed out the door.
It allows a lot of time to slowly test the unit and deal with any warranty issues prior to the start of camping season.
I would not base my timing on when to start paying for the RV, but I would consider when I can start using RV. Allow time for glitches and delays.
February is fine for the Philly area. February allows times for glitches and delays. By March and April things are starting to get going. You want to have everything sorted out and usable by March.

With my AF that was exactly how it worked. Dealer had 14 units allocated to him. When I ordered mine, eight of those 14 were pre-sold and probably more after that. My dealer told my it wasn't uncommon for Arctic Fox models to be totally sold out before they arive.
So if it's a popular model, you have to be very proactive.

After that you have to wait for the next batch build which is 6 mos later.

I ordered my non slide coachmen and missed the build dead line. I had to wait 5 months or so longer..

They build two times a year basically. slide and non slides. ( AFAIK)

Any custom orders as mine with a 10% deposit get built first. Mine was first off the line and delivered pretty fast.

They build these so fast your bound to have issues. I hope you dont but mine was huge in faults.

LP leak
Short on main batt wire to converter
Trap not hooked up at shower flooded bathroom
Pieces of wood and garbabage in underbelly and stuffed behind stove
And still a furnace that goes off on high limit.
A missing heating duct.

Etc etc etc..

Sounds like a typical 'Amish Craftmanship' build to me. I had the P trap issue in my unit as well, but I caught it before the shower flooded the floor. Never tightened the compression fitting and it came off the drain pipe. Would have been a helluva mess. As it was. my nebsihing around inside and taking off panels and checking stuff caught it.

Only issue actually. Could have been a disaster however.

Each manufacturer will have different lead times.. When I ordered my KZ back in 08, it was 6 weeks from order, to delivery... The Redwood I am in now was 8 weeks from order to delivery.. I passed on that one, I found one on the lot exactly how I wanted and sprung an offer...
