Reattaching sheet metal under Forest River 5th Wheel

I have a 2004 Forest River Cardinal 5th wheel. Last fall we had to do some maintenance to one of our slideouts (hadn't been greased in who knows how long - we bought it used last year) as one side had gotten off a cog or two on the track.

That's all done now. On the way back from my friend's house where we worked on it, some of the sheet metal that we'd re-attached under the camper came down and was scraping on the pavement.

I'm not sure the best way to re-attach this. I'm thinking some big washers, perhaps?

And should I shove some insulation up inside the cavity as well? And should I use some sort of spray foam along the edges once I'm done?

My friend did all the work but I've been unable to get in touch with him about this yet.

One thing I did notice is that this section of sheet metal is all attached from the bottom. Other sheets appear to be tucked up inside the lip they attach to, but I'm not sure I could get this one to do that after-the-fact.

  • A fender washer and I insulate everything!
If there's any chance it will get wet, use rigid insulation.
  • x2 on a fender washer

I like stainless steel self drilling self tapping screws for working under my trailer. that way I don't have to work with both a drill and a driver while laying on my back stuffed under the trailer.
  • X3 on the SS washers and screws. Perhaps a tad larger screw?
  • Put some caulking on the screws. This will keep them loosening up and vibrating out. I used spray foam to seal everything. Just be careful where you put them, the tanks are real close to the metal. The metal pieces over the axels was put in from the top. The rest are put on from the bottom.
  • I use 1 1/2 aluminum angle bar from side to side to hold the underbelly.
  • The fact that you had to get access to that area once would make me think twice about putting it back together in a "permanent" way, no caulk. Screw and fender washers in existing spots plus add a couple extra in between.
