SxS Heights

Wife wants a sxs, been thinking of the new Honda 700-4place.

The trouble starts when loading the sxs into the DF TH, max clearance height under the bottom double bunk is 72-1/2". No sxs I have looked at will go under the bunks.

As an Idea,
I was thinking of cutting the roll bars/cage off, then inserting an steel pipe insert into the OEM pipe, at the cutoff section, either welded or pinned.

Then add the cutoff section of roll cage/bars, over these inserts after unloading the sxs and securing with lock pins. This way, I could carry the sxs with no problems in the clearance under the bunks.

Anyone else have this problem??

Don
  • We are getting a Coachman Adrenaline 228 with two bunks on the tracks, we brought our Can Am Commander to make sure it fit in it before we bought it, even with the BRP roof it fit under the beds.
  • Here's a couple of things I found trying make our RZR 4 fit and keeping the lower bunk in our Raptor.

The stop switch at the top for the bunks had 2 different mounting holes and was in the lower hole from the factory, moved it to the top and it allowed both bunks to go an inch higher. Also the lower bunk had different mount holes for the brackets on the trollies so was able to move to the top holes and gained another 1 1/2". So gained 2 1/2" by making those adjustments, then as others have said lowered the air pressure in the rear tires and dropped the back of the RZR about another 1 1/2".
( the rear of the cage is the tallest part so you only need to lower the rear tires)
Also I'm not familiar with your trailer but if the rear of the garage is dove-tailed the rear tires will ride there and drop the rear cage height down another couple of inches.

BTW, don't know if you looked at the RZR 4 800 but the height is 75" as opposed to the Honda 4 at 78" and the Kawasaki 4 seater at 79".
  • I am dealing with the same consideration looking at Toy Haulers. We have a Kawi Teryx 4 (4 seater) which by the way I highly recomend looking into! and the cage is tall, especially with 2 beds in the garage. I am actually looking into chopping and re-welding my cage to lower the rear a bit. The T4 is a beast so go check it out before you buy anything and enjoy the riding!
  • another suggestion, use ratchet straps from A arms to frame above to suck suspension down, I can get teryx down 3-4"
  • The Yamaha Viking is 74 in tall and would probably fit by letting the tires down. Also there are some aftermarket cages that arent so tall but spendy.
  • I have a lift kit and larger tires and rims on my Mule. I let the air out of my front tires in order for it to clear the loft. I unscrew the valve stems. Doesn't add much to the loading/un loading process.
  • How much more clearance do you need? A lot of poeple just air down the tires if its a few inches.

If airing down tires doesn't work I would probably look at ways to move the bunk bed higher before hacking into my SxS roll cage. Yeah it will work but I don't know how much you would be compromising the structural integrity. THen you have to deal with storing loading/unloading of the cage each time. PITA IMO
  • To add to your height....

A lot of SxS have low ground clearance unless you add the lift kit to them to give you more clearance over rocks, logs, mud etc. Even if you don't buy the lift kit now, I think you should build it into your plans. And better tires are usually a little taller.
