Tire blow out

Heading over Mt. Hood in Oregon at mile marker 78 going west on HiWay 26 we, {my wife and I} had a blow out on our right rear tire on the fifthwheel trailer. Needless to say it was loud enough to get our attention and pretty scary as a semi and a line of cars were on our tail. I slowed down as quickly as possible and put on our flashers. Trying to find a spot where we could pull over safely to fix the problem. Single lane and no wide spots to change the tire. All the time the shreaded tire beating the wheel flare and other parts to pieces. I managed to pull over in a shaded area {temps was 89*} but still in a single lane. Took may chances and took out the bottle jack which I carry and seems to be the best and quickest way to get the trailer up. Changed the tire as fast as a pit crew would for my age {69 yrs. old}. Made it to a tire shop and got a new tire. The tire that blew was a Gladiator 12 ply as the rest were and my spare was the same type of tire. Waiting on tire manufacture to check out the tire to see if my claim against trailer damage will be accepted. My insurance has been notified but will not use them if tire manufacture accepts my claim.

Just wondering Reelay if you were running any of the TPMS systems?
If so, did any alarms or lights go off...

I had a tire blow out on my fiver while traveling I-40 in N. Carolina. As you stated, it made quite a bang. In my case I was very fortunate that my exit was only a short distance away, allowing me to continue to slowly travel to the camp ground where I had road service change the tire. There was no damage either to the RV or wheel. After I left the campground I had the remaining tires changed at a nearby facility before continuing cross country although the tires appeared to be in good shape. I was considering that they were the original tires and thought I'd go ahead and replace them.

I think the most important aspect to getting good results is to go with a large rating buffer with the tire you purchase. To a large extent this is built in when you go with LT tires. If you can get the speed/load charts and see the difference in how much lower an ST tire would be rated at the higher speed rating of the lt tire the difference really jumps out at you. Pushing anything to the max increases odds of failure.

Avoid the off-shore junk and go with the Goodyear endurance.
They're turning out to be a great tire at a fair price and it keeps Americans employed.
No reason to go elsewhere.

Just did a research on GY Endurance trailer tires and not one bad comment so looks like I will be changing over to the GY Endurance. Thanks to all for the input! Now we will wait and see on the outcome of the tire manufacture not putting to much hope in them. I am sure they will get some tech to say it was my fault.

Can Les Schwab order them for you or are you having to abandon loyalty to your locally headquartered tire company? LS has earned my business over the years with excellent service but I also will try the Goodyears when I am due.

If your going to switch ALL tires on the unit... Go with Sailuns. I know I am going to start a "Brand War" but you will not have any problems. Ours have been on our 5'er now for 4 yrs. Plan on replacing them next spring with another set of Sailuns. Good Luck and Happy Camping !!!

Did the tire shop have an opinion?

My son put on a set of GY Endurance tires on his 24' boat trailer yesterday, they are MUCH more substantial than the removed ones!!! Discount tire says they have a hard time keeping them on their shelves.

Spoke to SoCal GY rep he said they have had no issues.
