Tires & DOT

So...been dealing with tires and tire posts for many years and have a plethora of experience with them.

However I have a new challenge. Dealers seldom carry my tire in stock and they must be ordered either from the local tire guy or online. The issue is, they all say they have no say regarding DOT Date Codes when their suppliers send the tires. They are legal to sell as "new" up to four years after they are dated.

Ordering online is easy, reasonably priced and free shipping however...if they arrive with a four-year old date code I have to pay shipping to return which is very pricey on four Goodyear 614's.

I replace these tires every five years per DOT Code. I have been lucky over the past two purchases and got tires dated within a few months of install but I was able to select the tires onsite. This no longer seems possible.

What is the consensus regarding DOT Date versus "put in service" date on the integrity of a new tire?

Many thanks!

SH, interesting about Discount Tire. There are two locations here in Yuma, AZ. The location on 32nd ST., forget getting my 40' fiver in there. Their newest location at the Palms Mall is good to go. I have had Michelin XPS Ribs mounted on our fiver at Discount at one of their locations in Henderson, NV. Don't recommend that location as the best way is to get there about 7 AM, back in, then after mounting, pull out. It is on a busy Frontage RD. I did find another location in Henderson and had a set of Ribs mounted there last spring and they have all sorts of room. They were building another location not to far away and you will be lucky to get a Kia in there. My only problem with Discount has been some of the tire mounters don't know about stagger in dually valve stems.

I thought it odd that these stores (lots) are so small. The newest one isn't even a year old yet and no way they can accommodate a 40ft towable.

This will only be the 2nd time for new tires on my fiver. Its kept on a driveway at home so I just lift the tires off the ground with the Big Foot and remove the tires and take them wherever. I don't mind doing it this way compared to hitching up and driving into town.
I have never used Discount Tire but once for a car tire and they seemed very customer service driven. I have not inquired as of yet if they will mount the new 17.5 tires and as to whether they have high pressure metal valve stems. The stems that came on the rig are bit longer than I prefer especially with the TST monitor.

I will never understand the hassle many will go through to get trailer tires, the get them mounted. Three trailers all shod at local Discount Tire, good dot dates. If not in stock have them order, once tires are at store take the trailer in and have them do all the work.
Can’t believe those that will try to figure out to jack up the trailer then take one, two, or maybe all four to the tire store to have them mounted then drag them back and reinstall. Never seen a Discount Tire store I couldn’t get a 40’ trailer in.

We have two Discount Tire Stores in our county, neither of which will mount tires on a towable RV. Their stores cannot accommodate a 40ft 5th Wheel and one store does not do motorhomes as well.

Our local Point S will not do towable RV's.

Les Schwab can do towables any size but can't sell me the tire I want.

Maybe this will help you understand.

…...anyway, back to DOT codes on tires....I will update once they arrive.

As the OP I can also UPDATE. My GY 614's arrived from Amazon...great price, free shipping. However, three of the four were a year old and one was 10 months old. I returned them, again no charge for shipping and did receive a full refund in about 10 days.

Neither Simple Tire or Tire Rack would guarantee any kind of a reasonable DOT Date of Manufacture. Kind of a "you get what you get" attitude.

Anyway, on the recommendation from one of the posters above, I called my local Discount Tire (who I use regularly for our family vehicles) and they are willing to get me the freshest tires in their warehouse with a guarantee of no more than 6 months old. The are a bit more expensive.

Tomorrow I will be ordering from Discount Tire.

I have a feeling with the popularity of the Sailuns, those Goodyears are going to get old sitting on the shelf.

My Sailun 17.5 637 tires that I ordered on Thursday from Wal Mart arrived today via FedEx. Their DOT code is Nov 19.
Some have complained of not being able to find the DOT code on Sailun tire. Their website tells you exactly how to do so and allows your to register them for the 6 year warranty.
The DOT code on the 637 tire is only on one side and the 4 number code is an a small oval just after "DOT".

YOUR money, yes the suppliers and tire stores are making some money but especially in this day with a Country that's directly responsible for the deaths of so many people around the world I would not do so. Plenty of quality US made tires out there.

I agree, there are quality tires out there ,but please tell us what beats the Sailuns in the 16" & 17.5" G & H rated fifth wheel tires in price ,and reputation .

I know we have been over this China made thing several times, " Don't talk the talk unless you can Walk the Walk. Take a look around at what you have and say there are no items made in China in your household, if yes then go ahead ,and single out TIRES . Its pretty hypocritical if can't claim to buying made in China, its really that simple.

Yes ,you are correct MY money

VERY FEW items made in CHINA here and that way for MANY years. You can forget the price part but the GY "H" US made 17.5" tire is a great and very dependable tire same with the "G".

I have towed literally 100k with GY E,G and H tires accumulated and not one flat. I did have a tread separation on a H and GY replaced no equation.

My Redwing boots for general wearing and my Motorcycle boots are US made, Most of my jeans are US Made, My truck tires are US Made on both trucks.

I spend MORE with no hesitation to buy US Made when I can. My DeWalt 20V drill/impact set is US made. Could have bought a Chicom for less.

Over the years I bought most all US Made tools for my trade. Simple Dust pan US Made VS the copy that was Chicom.

Come on by some time and I will personally show you.

This morning, I ordered 4 Sailun s637 17.5 tries from Walmart with free shipping to my home and arriving in 2 days!!! Price for 4 was $634.96 including tax.
I have no idea what the DOT date is so I will update when they arrive. If, current (hopefully 2020), I will take them to Discount Tire next week for installation. If they are "old", I'm returning them.

Same here , ended up ordering from Walmart on the 16" Sailuns , just over 5 months old.
