So I bought a 2009 wolf pack 27 dfwp in 2008. It said 5,800 dry, which there is no way it was that light . Even completely empty the thing was hard to pull. I pulled it with my Chevy 6.0 gas, a Ford 6.0 that we programmed and exhaust, my current stock 2008 duramax, and two different Ford 7.3s (friends vehicles) and every truck struggled and got like 8 mpg towing. I sold it in the fall because I live in Spokane and frequently take it on 10 hour trips through several mountain passes. Was very frustrating to pull.

Now I am looking at the xlr hyperlite series. The 19hfs (4300 ponds) and the 24hfs (5600 pounds). Of course I would prefer the 24 as it will fit both my quads. But the small 19 footer is intriguing. I would imagine towing that would be easy, more similar to a regular enclosed trailer.

But I want the extra room in the 24 footer. So the question is, what are your thoughts on the difference in towing with 5 additional feet and 1,300 pounds? I imagine the 24 foot xlr is still way easier to pull than the 27 wolf pack I used to have.

Nope, can't stand salesman, wouldn't be one.
I just know that when my Chevy buddy can't keep up with me pulling the same trailer on the same hill, that means something there. 🙂

Get a Cummins and keep on goin when the others are broken. 🙂

I agree, but 5th wheel toy haulers are out of my price range.

Check on CL here in Phx they are comparable in price around here until you get into the big fancy 5er's.

I checked my trailer tires, they're ST's with no 65mph limit listed on the sidewall. Where would we see this 65mph limit?

Go to the tire manufactures website, it will be on there.

All tires have a "speed rating" It might be designated with a letter you have to look up.

I was getting 10.5 average with my 2008 Duramax pulling a 21k pound trailer and running 32k pounds truck and trailer down the road.

As said- something was/is not right with your truck or that trailer unless you just have an incredibly heavy foot and were racing up the grades in your area.

Doesn't sound like you have an actual problem except needing to slow down. You do know that most trailers come with ST tires that are speed rated at 65mph right?

The tires were rated over 100 mph. Can't remember the exact rating but know it was fine. And I tow through Montana, 70 is going slow.

Just because his mpg are different than some posted doesnt mean something is wrong with the trailer. Some drivers might have a heavier foot than others. BTW, he did mention mountain passes. Dont go buy a ford. I swear Lincster is ford saleman and does not want to admit it.

I got horrible mpg with my 05 duramax/ allison pulling a 30' 12 k 5th wheel. Everyone I talked to said something was wrong with my truck. I do believe with as many trucks that are produced something is bound to go wrong with a handful. Weather it be tranny issues or motor issue or programming issues. But to have an issue with 2 truck, without ever having your trailer looked out it will be hard to know for sure.

Get trailer with more room. You can never have enough room.

Yeah, like I said, the trailer as looked at. Another issue could be it had mudder style tires for off road. They were basically brand new still when I sold it. But that could have added drag.

And it was every truck. My built 6.0 was the same. That thing would burn the tires for 200 feet, ridiculous power (and in my mind drive way better than my duramax, just that pesky head gasket issue). It got better fuel mileage than my duramax since it was an 06 with no dpf. But still didn't get good fuel mileage towing that camper.

And I agree, I think I am leaning more towards getting the a 24. Tho I know towing the 19 footer will be easier.

And no on the new powerstroke. I don't want to get into a Chevy versus ford deal here, but I will stay Chevy. It's not the truck. Lol (besides,I am not made of money either.)

Yeah, the diesels didn't struggle from a weight perspective, I can get up the mountain passes at pretty much the speed limit. It was more of a fuel perspective. Having to stop every 180 miles for diesel sucks. My 6.0 powerstroke got me 220 miles with the 29 gallon tank. Just traveling through Montana and the Columbia river gorge you really have to pick your fuel spots.

I am hoping to get closer to 11 or 12 mpg. My current duramax gets 20 at 60 mph empty, 18 at 75, 16 at 85. I track my mileage with an app, so these are actual, and all within a half mpg from my dash.

Thanks for the responses.
