Water heater gas smell

My water. Heater didnt work long on gas before the lp detector went off this morning. The cabinet under the sink where the heateris smell heavily of gas but the burner is going.
Is this something like a plugged orfice (partial) or something else that I should investigate? It did the same thing last week bu I thought it was due to the winds and rain because then it was only a partial burn, sputtering so I shut it off and only used electric.

Any suggestions?
  • That's exactly what we did. Headed home today and I'll address the problem.
  • My opinion is that if "The cabinet under the sink where the heateris smell heavily of gas but the burner is going" you need to turn off the gas, air out the trailer, find the problem, and fix the problem
    before you get blown up.
  • I had a problem like that in a previous 5th wheel. Turned out to be a bad valve on one of the propane tanks. Replaced the tank and never had another problem.
  • Thanks for the reply. I did fill one tank recently and that maybe. They are both on currently. The gas smell comes out only when the water is heating which may mean the thermocouple is defective. I just guessing and gathering ideas now. I'll work it over when I get back home.
  • This may not be it but when one of my two tanks gets low there is a smell of gas seemingly everywhere. Switching tanks solves the problem. Hope yours is just as simple.
However, we have also had a problem with animals chewing thru the gas supply hose from the tanks to the camper which leaked gas.
