I've been towing with my B&W Companion for about 6 years now and always used a teflon disc, never had any issues. I also never used the pinned open position, never even wondered about it. I have noticed that it's difficult to find the correct pull out position, sometimes the jaws cam shut if I don't get just the right amount of weight off the pin or the release binds and won't open.
