What happened?

OK everyone, here is what just happened to me on our maiden voyage with our new 5er. We were on the road about 90 minutes traveling about 62 mph at 1800 RPMS. I had cruise control on and suddenly I am losing speed and I shut the cruise off. Then my truck starts doing 4000 RPM to maintain 60 on the flats and small hills and then it seem slike I have periods of losing power. I get off at the next exit (Turnpike) and the truck stalls at the toll booth. I pay the toll, wait a couple minutes and the trucks starts. I drive about 2 miles to the local Ford dealer and things appear to be fine but it is only a 2 mile ride. Any ideas what was wrong?

There are other companies making the same type of filter. I have a K&N FIPK system on my truck and I do feel that it's helped. I never get close to their max recommended cleaning period since I simply don't drive my truck that much. If I go 10k miles between cleanings, that's a lot. I have one on my Civic, too, and it did make a noticeable difference, though it's way dirty and it's making a noticeable difference. ๐Ÿ™‚ Banks also makes filters and intake systems. If you do a lot of miles, a CAI (cold air intake) might make sense, though if you off-road, just a filter would be better so you don't have to worry about water ingestion. (A CAI picks up cooler air from below the bumper or out of the wheel well instead of pulling hotter air from the engine compartment.) Adding a Banks Monster Exhaust also helped my D'max; it just breathes better from both ends.

I will be changing the oil in my truck from now on. I have done them before but began letting the dealer do it when they could do it for about what it the cost me, I figured they can deal with the oil disposal issue. (Now I just pour it on the ground since it came from the ground....ok I am only kidding about that...I take it to the recycle place.)

Trying to locate my records now but they are in a box. We moved and three years ago and my truck which was a daily driver became a "for pleasure only". I am only putting a couple thousand miles on a year.

Just curious about something? If the dealer has always been your go to place for lube and oil changes etc. and presuming you keep records of same, how many air filters have you bought in the last while and especially when did you buy the last one?

Cheers!

If you are not changing your own oil you certainly will not clean and oil an air filter. K&N filters are for gearheads and such. Every time we get a car traded in with one I toss it and put in a good Wix fiter.

You may want to think about adding a maintenance schedule to your calendar on your phone or computer. (Or take the truck in per the manufacturers intervals) Your filter should never look that bad!

Here is what it was...ground squirrel got into my air filter and made a bed out of it. The torn up pieces were restricting air to the air flow sensor. It was an easy issue to fix but what ticked me off is that about two weeks earlier I had an oil change at the dealer I bought it from. They were also cleaning out the heater/AC vents as the rodents got in there and made a home. Now I can understand the dealer not checking the air filter for that but when I got the oil change, they obviously did not check the air filter.....it was really dirty.

Had a friend have a similar issue with a pack rat and his Subaru, down in Rio Rico, AZ. Not only did they drag a bunch of junk into the intake, they chewed up his under-hood insulation and peed in the cabin air intake. That'll teach him not to leave bird food outside a metal bin. ๐Ÿ™‚ Glad it wasn't a serious issue.

I had them get into the air box of my Chevy HHR and drag in 4 pounds of dog food from the bag in the garage. It limited the ability to pass on hills. Glad the cause wasn't expensive.
