What happened?

OK everyone, here is what just happened to me on our maiden voyage with our new 5er. We were on the road about 90 minutes traveling about 62 mph at 1800 RPMS. I had cruise control on and suddenly I am losing speed and I shut the cruise off. Then my truck starts doing 4000 RPM to maintain 60 on the flats and small hills and then it seem slike I have periods of losing power. I get off at the next exit (Turnpike) and the truck stalls at the toll booth. I pay the toll, wait a couple minutes and the trucks starts. I drive about 2 miles to the local Ford dealer and things appear to be fine but it is only a 2 mile ride. Any ideas what was wrong?

Here is what it was...ground squirrel got into my air filter and made a bed out of it. The torn up pieces were restricting air to the air flow sensor. It was an easy issue to fix but what ticked me off is that about two weeks earlier I had an oil change at the dealer I bought it from. They were also cleaning out the heater/AC vents as the rodents got in there and made a home. Now I can understand the dealer not checking the air filter for that but when I got the oil change, they obviously did not check the air filter.....it was really dirty.

My thoughts would be a Transmission issue, if Fuel Pump, I don't think the engine would have turned 4,000 rpm, even if it had dropped a gear. That 5er likely weighs between 11,000# and 11,500# so not too great a load for the V10 with 4.10's, so towing in OD on the flats should not be an issue.

Torque converter lockup clutch inappropriately remained engaged.

Another thing to check is the thermostat. Engine can go into limp mode when overheated. Stopping for a while cools things down and you are ok for a while.

When my thermostat went bad, temperature gauge did NOT go into the red. The limp mode prevented that. (So it was doing its job.)

x2 on the fuel system issues. Its not to say you need to rush in and replace the pump because of what is said here but electric pumps are normal wear items. I have seen them bad at 50,000 and 250,000. They will cause long crank times, low power, stalling. You should have a schraeder valve on the fuel rail where a gauge can be attached. Some systems are susceptible to even small drops in pressure.
It may not be the pump as it could be a dirty ground in the fuel pump circuit. This is just internet ideas so tread slowly. If you are mechanically inclined you can start trying things or you will have to find a shop that doesn't want to wham bam you through. When they give the tech a work order for your vehicle and it doesn't show an obvious problem they will send you on your way. There were no codes?

Were it a diesel I'd say you kicked in to "limp mode". This is an annoying little problem that limits your speed and available gears....

Limp mode can be caused by a myriad of issues. Fortunately it goes away when you re-start the engine, but unfortunately leaves no codes.

I suspect a transmission problem....You were saying 62@1800 rpm?.....Was it in overdrive?..Does the truck have tow mode button?

I have an older truck, never tow in overdrive....3rd only

I would be checking the fuel pump. We've had two fail on gassers, one on a Class A and another on a B+. Ours were in the tanks. When they heat up, they fail and you don't get fuel. Once they cool down, you can start it and go a bit till it heats up again.
