Where do your pets ride?

We have been RV'ing for over ten years. With our "C's" and the "A" we have allways had the pets ride with us in the RV. Now, getting ready for the fifth wheel a question has come up, do your pets ride in the TV or back in the fifth wheel when on the road?

Two 70 pound Aussie/Heelers ride right in the truck with us. They are family, so they ride with the family.

Right here, because WE like him close to us. He would have no problem riding in the fifthwheel, which we would do if we had people in the rear seat.

Our cats prefer to ride in the 5vr. When we had the dog ( she passed ) she sometimes would ride in the truck and sometimes she chose to ride in the 5vr. We have a camera so we can watch them in the 5vr, they usually will curl up on the bed next to the window and look outside or play with their toys. We do stop every couple hrs on longer trips. Never had an issue in the last 2 1/2 yrs...

I built a box/kennel out of plywood in the pickup bed. It was in front of the hitch to the front of the pickup bed and stretched across the width of the bed.
The lid was split 70/30 with the 30% on the street side. The lid stuck up above the bed rail 3 inches. I put an RV roof vent near the center on the 70% lid for ventilation when stopped.

In the side of the box facing the hitch I cut a large eliptical hole and stapled wire mesh on the inside of the box to cover this hole. This provided the two medium sized dogs a view when the truck was parked(they slept in the box at night). Two cedar & foam dog beds plus water dish on the floor of the box.

The dogs were Keeshonds and with the type of fur they had, they hated to be inside. They would get too hot. The box provided them with plenty of air.

They travelled in the box while the 5th wheel was being towed down the road.
We never travelled in hotter than 75 degree temps with the dogs in the box. If the temp approached 75 we would bring the dogs into the back seat of the crew cab. They hated it but it was for their own good.

They travelled like this for about 9 years before they failed from old age.
All you had to do was say let's go camping and they would head for the truck.

picture a 120lb lab in the back seat - until you get close to a campground he recognizes - then picture this same dog bouncing between the back seat and on the arm rest between you . . . .

On the mamma's lap wrapped up in a blanket like a burrito.

If it was a space issue, I wouldn't be concerned about having him in the RV though.

Ours always ride in the truck...... NEVER in the RV.

The cats hated riding in the rig, so they ride in a carrier, in the truck, between the dogs, the carrier is strapped in.
The dogs have their own beds (strapped down) and they are clipped into the seat-belts via a harness.
None of our critters can become flying objects.

Saw a big DP this past trip that the little yappy white dog was allowed to run loose, he was on the dash, running back and forth as he barked at us as we passed them.:R

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.

I have to say that I am appalled that anyone would even consider putting their pets in the TT or Fifth Wheel. No ventilation, no securing them down and they are bouncing around like bingo balls in the hopper. If you love your pets you will always have them in the TV.

Our dogs ride in the back seat of our crew-cab truck. If I was bringing a bunch of grandkids along and the weather wasn't particularly hot, I *might* put the dogs in a crate in the 5er over the kingpin area; and then stop and check on them every 2 hours or so. I doubt the 5er is "cruel" to ride in - it's just that they're used to riding WITH us.

Ours is in a crate, that is seat belted, on the rear seat of the tow vehicle.

He has been riding there since he was a puppy and now is very uncomfortable riding anywhere else! He likes it.
