Hi all,
I'm considering installing a satellite tv system in my rv and and wanted to get a feel for what would be system to go with.I know opinions will vary but still.Dish or Direct tv.
The Winegard TRAV'LER DISH 1000 Multi-Satellite TV Antenna or the
TRAVLER DIRECTV SWM Slimline Automatic Multi-Satellite TV Antenna.
And Are both of these about the same to install ?

Thanks Rich

We use a Dish 1000.2 with a EA Hybrid feeding a new Hopper 3 receiver. This set up will get any programming Dish offers and the DVR will record up to 16 programs at one time...NEVER a recording conflict! The dish is mounted on a surveyors tripod and since we are currently on a heavily wooded site it is feeding from 100' away on the other side of a tree line. We have been full timing for 6 years and have never had a problem concerning theft of ANYTHING.

We use Dish Network and have a 1000.4 dish with both the Eastern and Western LNB's. We can almost all the time get a signal. Been using this setup for 3 years without a problem.

I use the Dish Tailgater. It is very light and would be easy for someone to walk off with. I have mine chained to the front Landing Gear on my 5th wheel.
Yes, those might be worth stealing.

Tailgater here and I place it on the roof of the 5er,
We use Dish service.

How do you keep it up there? They only weigh about 12 Pounds. How is it secured? Since they have to be pointed Southwest, do you get up there and move the Antenna around when you move the Trailer?

Tailgater self aims, and simply loop a light rope 1/4" around a vent cover. Never had an issue with it moving.

We love our Tailgater. It works perfectly.

We tried the tailgater, could never lock on to a sat! We tried 3 different units, no go. Currently have Direct, using a King Quest antenna, Dome auto seek antenna. Only had one problem, trees in the way, we asked to be moved two spots over, and BOOM, picked up our HD programs with no problems! Yes I understand, if I had portable antenna I could have moved the antenna to avoid the trees, but as I said, I did not have any luck with the tailgater. I used to have a stand alone antenna, and was able to pick up any sattilite I wanted. With the tailgater there is nothing to adjust, you "plop" it down and hope it is able to pick up the Satelite! At least with a tripod, and a meter, you can move things around until they line up!

The most flexible for Dish is to be able to pick up the eastern and western arc satellites. A tri-pod or Winegard Carry Out will do that. My Carry Out has switches to select eastern, western and hybrid(mix of eastern and western) satellites. If a tripod is used you need a dish that is versatile enough to select the eastern or western arcs. That can be a challenge 🙂 That is why I went to the Carry Out to automatically select the chosen satellites. If is unable to get a clear view of the sky for all sat's it will select what it can see.

If you go with a satellite dome type you can only get HD with dish not with Direct TV. If you go with tripod and get the right satellite dish you can get HD with either. Personally I had dish and was extremely happy. When you sign up get "Snowbird"status so when you travel you call Then when you get to your destination you call them and tell them to set up local channels for that area. Your home area local channels only come in for about 200 mi from your location.

I have Directv with wireless Genies in my home and I take the system with me in the trailer. The Winegard Travler antenna gets me great HD tv and everyone can watch a different show on each TV.

Not likely. You'd be money ahead up until it was stolen the 13th time.

No problem with my cheap homade mount running away, but I did buy and install a cheap solar light on top of it. Had some kids playing around after dark, and wanted everyone to know where it was. Hated to go back out after dark to reset it after someone bumped into it
