I really don't think it will matter where the dog is at that point
infact, I would bet the dog would have a much better chance of surviving(20%) being thrown free than crushed in the cab(10%)

My dogs ride in the back of the truck in crates with the door open. When going slow or stopped the dog can get out sniff the air and stretch. A dog can be TRAINED (key word) to get into the box and stay as the truck begins to move. Even did this with a flat deck. Folks honk and say your dog is loose. Ranch dogs can be trained, City dogs can't or they are just smarter than their owners

I wouldn't have a dog in the back with the 5th wheel:

- Airflow changes would disrupt the normal enjoyment of facing the wind for the dog
- Hitch, cord, etc would limit scampering room
- 5th wheel would limit what the dog could do to move around


...but I would and have carried dogs in the back at either city or highway speeds. Typically (not always) used to put the dog in a portable kennel if the trip was more than a few miles of highway driving though.

Dogs LOVE being in the back of the truck on the way to the cabin: an hour or so at 50 -55, then a couple of hours at 5 - 10

Didn't catch that seeing how we would never let dawgs or any living creature not contained ride in an open pickup bed.

I could see how any animal or person might be seriously injured though.

A loose dog could possibly cause the trailer plug to be pulled out or tangle in the brake switch lanyard and jerk the plug out throwing the brakes on.

Good judgement sometimes just doesn't come into play.

I guess my biggest question that no one really touched on is whether or not the dogs would be in danger from the fifth wheel itself? I envision a tight turn that could be lethal to a pair of large dogs.

My dogs have always loved riding in the bed. Not tied down in any way. All around town. Much preferred to riding in the cab. Sits right there and just loves it. You can see them smile.

But anytime when going on the highway, dog comes inside.

The airflow changes back there with the 5th wheel. Stuff tends to blow forward and up and over. I would think the dogs would hate it compared to just riding in a truck not towing.
