We received our letter requesting proof of residence today from South Dakota, Sanford Health plan, they request 2 forms of proof that we have been residence for 9 months. We do our banking , have drivers license , register 3 vehicles and still cant meet the 2 requirements, unless we basically move to South DAKOTA. Any suggestions on a affordable company we can go with in S.D.?

For what it is worth we had no problem getting private health insurance in SD as full timers before we went on Medicare. The company we used was Assurant.
BC/BS on the other hand would not continue our policy in either NH or SD unless we had a real address and spent more than six months continuously in the state each year.
That was about 7 years ago.

Unfortunately the plans offered in each state are based on what the insurance companies see as the needs of the people in that state.

SD is limited in their traveling population.

Texas and Florida have larger populations which means more insurance companies want to be part of their plans.

Texas at least also includes a large number of transit workers. Not those in Texas to work, but people from Texas which travel around the country to work. Including a lot of people who do not RV. That gives the insurance companies incentive to offer national plans to capture that market.

My guess, only a guess, is there aren't enough people with SD residency who travel to justify an insurance company offering that option.

You can be sure if there was enough of a market, insurance companies would offer the coverage.

I agree. I could get coverage for my state, but I'm opting for the national coverage for about 3-4 times the cost. I just want to make sure that if something happens that we are covered and nothing will come back and bite us in the rear. But this is through the county government, as we are teachers.

Since this post is in the fulltime forum I'm going to assume that the OP is a fulltimer. While some fulltimers may reside in one place for years, many (most) travel frequently during the year. There should be a national option instead of a state option for fulltimers.

I'm in the same boat, with the ACA and all the other issues I no longer have ins. SD INS companies don't insure unless you reside, actually live in the state, for at least 6 months. Then the problem becomes that the ins companies only have in state doctors.

I think you are going to find that they will require you to be in the state for a minimum number of months - something like 6 months.

About the only thing you can do, which a lot of us have been saying for several years for people who need individual health insurance, is to move to a state with a larger population like Florida or Texas.

Curious here too. Are they looking for utility bills only?
