Sure one can. YOU do it, others will use the conveniences they desire :) :) That is the beauty of life, do what you want and others will do what they want

when we got a genny onboard with our toyhauler I realized I love having this backup when needed. We stop overnight in rest areas or parking lots sometimes and a genny onboard is wonderful to have and all my rvs of the future will always have an onboard for sure. I love their convenience when needed.

Been lucky, I guess. Haven't had the need for a generator in twelve years.

Some campgrounds have a rule of no generators allowed to be used. Although there are a lot of people out there who can't read or understand English and run them anyway. :D

So, you rely on yourselves to provide food and water? And no, that doesn't mean going to the grocery store or turning on the tap. :) And BTW, do you refine your own fuel to power that generator?

Our generator has its own place in the basement and not used but a couple times a year. I would never travel without it!!!! As in our RV life and every day life we are self reliant and only depend on each other. I would never count on a RV park or anywhere else to supply me with what we need. Most the time they do but would not rely on it! Self responsibility is becoming a thing of the past in today's youth and society in general.

I remember sleeping out in the yard in an army surplus jungle hammock because it was too hot in our house. It was fun and I always enjoyed it. When we got a house with a basement the whole family slept down there, but sleeping outside was the most fun. I live in my RV and don’t consider it camping. In May and June I did take a 12,300 mile camping trip in my Dodge Caravan from southeast Arizona to Alaska and back. However, even on that trip I found it more convenient to sleep in the back of my Caravan. I did cook about 95% of my own meals, usually canned food modified with spices. Years ago, doing similar camping with my kids, my mantra for meals was if we couldn’t prepare it, eat it, and clean it up in 45 minutes or less we were doing something wrong (not that I was timing it or anything). After all the thing was camping was for hiking, swimming, tubing, having fun… not food prep!

However, I have to go along some with noplace2, we have become a society of weather wimps and have become overly dependent on our modern day comforts. That said, as long as my AC works, I’m using it!

BTW modern cars are designed so that there’s no airflow like the older cars had before the prevalence of AC. It used to be on a hot day you could flip the no-drafts (remember them?) forward, open up the air vents and at 60mph the car would turn into a wind tunnel.

To each his/her own. I've been living the last 20 days in my old RV without AC in 90 degree heat after downsizing from all the comforts in a big house. Not to mention repairing it in a parking lot in this heat. I would like some of the comforts, but this old girl needs some work before I'll have it. As I sit here, I also think of the old days, when not having it was enough. Finding the balance for me is learning what I need and what I want, and in doing so, find out about myself.

Today, almost everyone is hooked on a pampered lifestyle, no longer camping, but RVing with all the luxuries. A home away from home, no longer "getting away from it all".

It was 105 degrees here on the lake northeast of Dallas on Saturday at 1 pm when the power went out.

Not the COE campground fault - a power line went down and the entire north shore of the lake was off-line. Power didn't come back on for 12 hours.

Really, really wished I had bought that generator last week.

Since it is a 30amp CG, the single AC could only keep the TT down to about 88-90 degrees, which was much better than outside.

With the power off, the internal TT temp hit 112 before it started to cool down to about 103 at midnight while we were trying to sleep.

Since low temps are above 80 around here, it never cools off much in the summer.

40 years ago - nobody went camping when temps were this high. We did out camping in April, May, early June, late September, October and November.

AC extended the camping season to include the previously forbidden months of July and August.
