We had intended to use S. Dakota but don't want to drive there in midwinter.
You do NOT need to drive to SD. You can set up "domicile" without driving to the state. I need a SD address for my investments to stop paying State Income taxes on the investments. You will need to spend a night in the state to get a driving license. But you can set up domicile with car tags and as your Federal Tax state etc by mail.
Google domicile. It is the state you "call home". I use My Home Address because it is in a small town. I used SD for my domicile (tax address) for a number of years before I was in SD (for a few nights) to get my new driving license.
