Happy March! (Yes, the month, as well as any marching you may be doing!)A question for those who moved into their RV full time AND gave up their primary residence. How did you do the actual move? I live in an apartment on a busy street with limited parking, so it's not as if I can park the RV out front and take my time shifting things over into it and organizing. Did you find and pay for parking for the RV and do a moving truck, or?? Did you stay in the RV while organizing, and did you find someplace that would let you do that? By the way, RV parks (the obvious answer, though they might *really* frown in a moving truck in there) are as rare an hen's teeth in the city of Boston, where I am right now. Does anyone have any other ideas, or already dealt with this problem? I previously lived on a boat for 2 years, so the lack of space does not bother me at all. Actually, it will be more space than the boat had. The rooms will not come to a "point", and slides do not exist on boats!

I think most of us moved from a house so we didn't have to deal with parking problems. You should be able to fit all of your stuff into a regular van. How far away is the nearest RV park? How about a storage lot? In your situation I'd get a site in a RV park, load everything in the van, transfer it to the RV and spend a few days at the park organizing. You'd have to do some shuttling around with the two vehicles but it should work out okay.

If you get all of the major belongs together ahead of time you should be able to park the RV on the street for a reasonable amount of time. Just take all the boxed up stuff and stick it anywhere inside. This will cover all the big bulky stuff (have friends/family come help if available) in pretty short order and you can then move the RV to an RV friendly location. You could also put the RV in an RV park and rent or borrow a van or P/U that would allow you to load your stuff and take it to the RV. You are not going to be putting much stuff in the RV compared to what someone would put in a house or apartment so cull out what's going and what's not, get rid of what's not and then you should be able to make one big load, hopefully, directly into the RV.

In your situation I think you'd have to find the closest RV park and rent a space, rent a small U-Haul and load it up to take to your parked RV. I can't see any problem especially if you explain to the RV park that you'll be coming in with the U-Haul and will be returning it the next day. Just unload and stuff it in...you can sort through it at leisure while staying in the park. You really won't be transfering a lot of big stuff because remember - it all has to fit in that little RV! Now get busy sorting...you'll be just fine.

Another option may be to rent a storage unit for a month, put everything but essentials in there, then park your RV at the RV Park of your choice. Move your essentials into your RV. Then you would have the remainder of the month to move the rest of your stuff.

I have a question. What does a person do with postal mail? We plan on traveling and not sure where we will end up, at least for a couple of months. Any input would be appreciated.

As is common in this area, it's actually a house divided into 4 apartments, all on this street. Not really an apartment complex. We live on a busy, narrow street with constant traffic. If even a car is parked on each side, the city bus cannot even pass at the same time as a car. (Welcome to Boston. ACK!). When I moved in, we parked in a paid lot next door for a couple of hours and prayed they would not tow us. ;-)

Oh, and as to why I am waiting - I have a daughter who is in High School here. She is doing great there and loves it. I will not leave here until she is done.

Others who move in and out of your building must park their moving truck on the street in order to load and unload their belongings. And I'm sure that furniture trucks, appliance trucks, UPS trucks and dozens of other large vehicles must make regular deliveries to your apartment building too. Why not just park your RV in a similar manner?

You'll have to get used to parking in tight places and occasionally inconveniencing others as you embark on your new lifestyle. Sometimes you'll just have to take annoyed glares and the occasional horn honk on the chin. Just be friendly, smile and wave and try not to totally block the street.

Plan ahead for moving day, have everything ready to go, and try to limit your on-street parking to 3-4 hours mid-day (or on a weekend).

We stayed at a state park close to the house and just made several trips. We separated what we wanted to take and what was going to "Charity".

Went to Boston ONCE for a sporting event with my MH.......I feel your pain. I will NEVER stay or go thru Boston ever again with an RV.

The idea of going through these horribly narrow streets, and this traffic, with an RV, is frankly terrifying. I am hoping to only have to do it once - as I leave Boston on a one-way trip out.

I am going to have to leave some storage behind. I have 3 pieces of furniture that are heirloom, and that I will pass to my daughter when she is able to move off base and get her own place.

Ah yes. AND "Leave NO storage unit behind" when you go full time.

I did not listen to the wise ones here on the forum and had 3 storage units filled after I sold the house and hit the road. $$$$$$

When we sold the house, we loaded our stuff in a U Haul Trailer, closed on the house and headed to a hotel 300 miles south for a week while final prep on the RV was done.
Picked up the RV, went to a RV Park and loaded our stuff into the RV.
If you have more stuff than will fit into a U Haul, you have too much stuff !!!
