How much are you driving your Toad?

As we approach FT, I am questioning my selection of toad. The Jeep in sig is highly modified, and while it makes a great vacation vehicle, I'm not so sure it's the best to live with every day. Wind noise, tire noise, poor mpg. Great off road (what I built it for) but not my vehicle of choice for an all day drive on pavement.

We're thinking maybe a CRV or something similar would be a better all rounder.

A key part of this is how much daily driving gets done. As we transition from working to FT, not sure how that will change. So how much are YOU driving the toad, and what are your thoughts?

Thanks!

we're full timers and enjoy volunteering. Most of the parks and refuges we volunteer at are not close to towns, so we use our toad (a CRV) a lot, and we alike to explore the back country. Last year we logged 20K miles on the toad.

On three month trips out West we put 7-8K miles on the MH and just as many on the toad... yes that is with it unhooked. We usually stay 5-6 days in one place and then move on the weekends which makes it easier to find a big enough spot on Monday.
This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

Used to have a 5th wheel so had a truck to drive around. Now we have a MH and tow a Chevy Sonic. Way better to drive around than the truck and double the MPG. this winter we will be snowbirds for 2 months and will probably drive the sonic around 2,000 miles.

we drive our toad (grand cherokee jeep) all the time..at home and on our trips. it has taken us over some pretty tough roads, or down the interstate.

We have a 5th wheel so don't exactly have a toad, but the pickup that pulls the 5th wheel is a monster with about a quarter-mile turning radius, and gets lousy mileage. When we are somewhat close to home we get our Chevy Volt and drive it instead. Believe me, when we're stuck with the pickup because we're far from home, we hate having to drive it because of the mileage and its size. I highly recommend towing a vehicle you're happy with and comfortable driving. It makes a difference on "field trips."
Fulltiming until I have seen everything I want to see, it isn't fun anymore, or I run out of money. Let's hope it's not the last one.

Think about once your "Home" is set up in a campground or near a lake, or in the forest. Say you might volunteer at a RV park for summer for the free site and something to do.

What will you drive when you do not want to move the RV to go get groceries, sightseeing, or whatever you happen to want to do?

I know that I did not want to pack up everything in the RV just to go into town and buy some ice cream. However a short trip in the Honda CRV was a nice change from sitting in the RV.

Now I have a Ford Edge that is all wheel drive. I installed the hitch on the 99 CRV and the 07 Edge. I also installed a brake system using a cruise control motor, that pulls a cable (with engine vacuum) and that pulls the brake pedal to the floor.

I am sure that you will not be driving to work, but still think of all the other tasks that you will do while full timing.

Have a great time once you start full timing.
