Moho and toad insured with different companies?

Since I'm a fulltimer, I have limited choices on who to insure the motorhome with. I currently have Blue Sky--have also had National Interstate and Progressive in the past. The toad has always been insured with USAA.

The other day, I hit an alligator in the road and it ripped off the plastic sewer hose storage thing under the RV. I saw plastic bits flying around in my rear-view mirror and knew what had happened. There was no damage to the toad.

But it it got me to wondering. If the plastic or the alligator had done damage to the toad, which insurance company would I report it to? At first thought I figured it would be USAA for the toad, but would they balk because it was being towed, and if my motorhome hadn't hit the alligator there wouldn't have been any damage to the toad? What if my motorhome hadn't caused the damage at all, like if another car's tire blew and that hit the toad and my motorhome had nothing to do with it, except it was towing the toad?

Does anyone have real-life experience with this sort of thing?

I was thinking a "safer" route would be to have the motorhome and toad insured with the same company, but I'm not sure that's really necessary. I'm generally not a fan of USAA (I know, I'm the only one on earth), but I've had their auto insurance for decades and don't want to change unless there's a good reason.

So nobody has ever had actual experience with a claim on an auto when it was being towed by a motorhome? I'm now thinking that comprehensive would be the only coverage applicable, since liability and collision kick in when it's being driven.

And generally, companies are pretty easy with comprehensive. They just ask where and when the hailstorm was, or where and when you got the rock chip in the windshield. Maybe there's nothing to worry about after all.

Your question is exactly why I decided to insure both my truck and 5th wheel with one insurance carrier. I could see all the possible hassles and battles on the horizon and didn't want anything to do with them. At the very least it seemed to me that there could be a delay in getting any needed repairs if I was dealing with two insurance carriers. So I have both with National Interstate thru Miller Insurance.

How did the alligator fare? How big was it.

My trailer would be covered by the tow vehicle insurance, while connected, even if I didn't have a policy on trailer.

I can't answer your question but this happened to me,

My wife and I were driving the motorhome to FL for the winter. I sold my tow car and bought a new Odyssey van. Since we only take a car to FL for the winter I just have my son drive it down.

He was following me in the motorhome and my rear duals kicked up a stone and broke the windshield in new my Odyssey van.

When I got to FL my neighbor there was having a windshield installed by Safeguard Glass. I called Safeguard and they contacted my insurance company for me. In a couple days they came and installed a new windshield in my van.

I actually never spoke to my insurance company. Safeguard handled everything.

I wonder what my insurance company would have said if I told them a stone from my motorhome broke the windshield in my van.

I have the same insurance company for my motorhome, 2 cars and my home. My one and only insurance company ever. I've had them for 53 years. The agent was a close friend of my fathers. Now the grandson runs the agency.
