I got a jury notice late when my mail arrived. Emailed them I was traveling for the winter in state and just got my mail.
Got another 6 was later and same thing...
Another one forFeb 11 which I got on the 13.
Emailed I was not going to be in the area for awhile could I be excused.
Nope, I have to show up for 1 and tell the judge why I can't serve..

How do you handle this type of notice? I am 8 hrs away from jury location.

Call them and talk to them. Here in my county if you’re over 65 you don’t need a reason to get excused.

CALL their office and talk to a real live person.
Note date time and persons name.

That should easily solve your problem.

You do your civic duty and show up

X2 jury duty is not only a civic duty but also a great privilege. Imagine how bad things might be without a random jury of our peers.

Jury duty, a good reason to fulltime out of Polk County, Livingston, TX. thru the Escapees RV Club. Over 13 years we received numerous jury duty notices. We usually got them when either were already supposed to be there or the next day. Called the number on the notice at Polk County and there was no problem. There is a group of folks that stay at the Escapees Park in Livingston that volunteer for jury duty. Having lived for 50 plus years in Pennsylvania, they would nail you there. I was on jury duty there and one potential juror told the judge that if he was needed on a certain date he couldn't be there due to a heart specialists appointment at Hershey Medical Center. The judge asked him about changing the date and the appointment he had was already made 90 days out. After much discussion between the judge and the juror, the judge came to his senses and would excuse him for that day.

As mentioned, each court has their own rules and what my court does isn't what someone else court may do. Last August (2018) a while bunch of AZ residents found out the hard way why ignoring jury notices is a bad idea. Both a combines state, county and federal crackdown was initiated. Not only did they get a visit from the County Sheriffs or US Marshall's, but a personal appearance in front of some not so touchy feely Judges. Fines and threats of contempt confinement was on the list of punishment for continuing to dodge jury duty.

It seems they understand RV's travel but they won't let you slide notice after notice regardless of your personal travel plans. Those who got slammed were those who ignored the notice claiming traveling.

I don't see how anything can come of it ignoring is as they are not sent signature required/certified mail. How could they ever prove you actually got the notice while I can prove all day long that my mail goes to various different addresses on my street and vice versa.

Because the OP has already contacted them acknowledging that the notice was received.

I agree with calling or sending a letter. Indicate when you will be back in the area - they are more likely to give you a postponement IF you give them a date when you will be available. Just a generic "I'm out of the area" is unlikely to be successful.

Every state has it's own laws around jury duty. Every county within each state has it's own policies regarding excused and postponed jury duty. The best way to deal with this is call them and find out what your options are. You may be able to be excused. You may only get to postpone it. It sounds like you already missed a date. That's why they want you in front of the judge now.

Regarding consequences, judges do have the discretion to administer jail time for failure to appear. However most municipalities would rather just enforce a fine than put someone in already over crowded jails just for failure to appear. Dutch, very likely your neighbor has not told you the whole story. Unless you live in a county where law enforcement has very little to do. Where I live the only time one might get arrested for it is if they get pulled over for a traffic violation.

When we FTd we used SD as domicile
1st year I got a Jury Duty notice..called the number on notice/County Court Clerk and informed them that I was FTr.
Name was removed from Jury Duty Rooster

3 weeks later she got a notice...same procedure------CALLED and SPOKE with Court Clerk
Her name was removed from rooster

Have you tried CALLING and SPEAKING with Court Clerk vs e-mailing???
IF you are a FTr...then you should be able to be removed from rooster
IF you are just traveling..you should be able to have it postponed

CALL and SPEAK with someone. Then followup with e-mail to confirm
Is it time for your medication or mine?

I am in Clearwater, Fl about 8 hrs from Pensacola mail.
I would love to do my jury duty but am not there. I have served numerous times when we were stationary.

Jury duty dismissal rules depend on state or county rules. Some are more lenient than others. I ( Oregon) sent a email explaining I was a full time rver and while my home and taxes were paid in Oregon I wasn’t going to be in state and in fact on the east coast for the fowllowing year. Got a nice letter from the court thanking me and dismissing the court duty. May be different in your state but honesty worked in my instance .. they get plenty of excuses from people who live in the area but won’t do the duty.

Don't bet on it. A few years ago, I watched a neighbor get put in handcuffs for a free ride in a police car for failing to appear for jury duty. A jury duty summons is no different than any other summons. Some states are more tolerant of no shows than others, but it can catch up to you. My neighbor was back home that evening after posting a $500 cash bond, and 6 months later received a 30 day suspended sentence and a $250 fine following a misdemeanor conviction.

Currently, the NY State unified jury system provides a simple to use online setup that lets you postpone jury duty with the choice of which upcoming session you expect to be available for. I used it last year for a county grand jury duty summons. When I finally appeared months later, I was released within an hour due to more people showing up than expected. I just smiled and signed for the $40 jury pay for the day and went home... 😉

Send a letter Certified Mail with Return Receipt and also include proof of a copy of the bill where you are staying. I thought you were excused if you were 50 miles away?
