The answer to your question lies in what type of repairs, maintenance and projects are you capable and willing to do? For those who only will do minor repairs and maintenance a basic toolkit of basic hand tools is all that may be needed, although I would add a multi meter to the kit and a cordless electric drill can come in handy for many things and a credit card. For those who are able and willing to take on significant vehicle maintenance and repairs in addition to the basic hand tools a full blown mechanics set of tools will likely be needed.
