2001 RT D190P awning removal

Wow, removed the awning from my RT today. In 13 years of ownership have never used it. It weighs a ton. Only had to drill out three pop rivets to remove it. There were a lot of pine needles and leaves stuck behind it as well as a lot of alge and gunk. I left the brackets in place and can re-attach the awning with short bolts and nuts if we decide it may be needed in the future. Sure makes the RT look sleek and when we close the door, no more rattling awning! Plus there is a hole forming in the forward end cap that will scoop rain into the enclosure full time. The end caps are pop riveted on so may be difficult to replace.
  • Use it or lose it I say. One of the first thing we did when we bought our Roadtrek (used) was to sell it back to the dealer for a store credit. After reading the challenges awnings sometimes cause we decided we didn't want the weight or potential problems. Over the eight years I would have liked to have a awning maybe 3 times. So for me, it was a good decision to remove it.
  • I'm always interested that so many people never use their awnings on class Bs. (We do fairly often.)

After a while, it sure does make sense to remove heavy or bulky stuff including table tops plus the stuff just sitting in compartments when you realize you've never used it. Great for better fuel mileage.

We have a friend with an Itasca Navion C who removed all kinds of stuff including the bed parts from the sofa. Can always go back in when time to sell.
  • The end caps are easy to replace just drill out the rivets, and re-rivet on the new ones. I did mine in about a 1/2 hour.
Fiamma also make a flexible piece that fits behind, and runs the whole length of the awning, to keep leaves, and other debris from accumulating
