It is not something that is listed as a normal variation of the Sprinter platform, so Mercedes gets a specialist company to modify , it's chassis

Yeah our driveway drops down from the road 24 feet in elevation over 200 feet and then rises back up again to our house in another 200 foot loop. After a fresh snow and before the plow comes we can slide on it.

Hmm. I remember the pic you sent with you and yours heading down the driveway in toboggans or something like that. So, a 4x4 might be good for that long driveway but only if you go rving in the winter, eh?

Have you driven you FWD Travato in the snow yet?

Ground clearance is raised 3.1" in the rear and 4" in the front.

The ground clearance gained by the 4x4 isn't much from what I read. AFAIK, it is at most an inch or two, so the CG difference is not that much. For a van that lives its life in a city, I'd not bother, but for snow and general handling, I'd definitely consider this.

Mercedes has had 4WD vehicles for a long time, so it goes without saying that their setup will be as good as you are going to get.

I am sort of surprised it isn't AWD (where the vehicle runs 2WD, but powers all wheels if it senses slippage, similar to the Honda Ridgeline.) However, having 4-Low can be quite useful, even if one isn't going far off the beaten path.

(Edited for clarity, to reflect the difference in height by the 4WD mechanism as opposed to the van's clearance height.)

I have never heard anyone say that before. You would have to live on blacktop not to want more ground clearance.
