Allison 2500

I hope this is not too vague.

We have a 2014 Fleetwood Excursion 33D with the 300 HP Cummins and (what I think is a) Allison 2500 transmission. We bought it new off the lot in March or 2016 and it's under full warranty. Either way, we are having problems.

Occasionally in the past, I've attempted to put it in drive by pressing the D button on the selector. Nothing happened. I presses the R button, felt it shift and saw the jump on the tachometer that indicated the shift. After a few seconds, I pressed the D button and it went right into drive. This happened several times, almost always on a 'cold' start up.

One time, the transmission shifted to neutral as I was driving through the cul-de-sac at the end of our street. It may have been in first gear. Kinda of freaked me out.

This was the real problem. A couple of trips after the driving shift to neutral, we attempted to leave a campground near our home. I pressed the D button and NOTHING happened. It would go into reverse but never into drive. I attempted several button presses and combinations but nothing happened. Finally after about 15 minutes or so, it shifted into drive and it went perfect all the way home.

A few days later, we took the RV to the camping world that had been doing the warranty work on other items (That is a completely different story and a perfect example of near incompetence). The RV started up fine and performed flawlessly the trip there, about an hour fifteen minute drive. When I asked the service writer if they cold look at it, the writer asked the service manager who said no, we would have to take it to Fleetwood.

I'm open to suggestions and will answer any relevant questions.

My thanks.

Thanks for the follow up and glad you got it fixed. I was going to suggest Freightliner, but then paused as I wasn't positive they did the transmission work.

We got it fixed.

The problem was getting worse. We took the camper to the Freightliner service center in Gaffney, SC.

It was the shifter motor that was out of calibration. They had to order one from somewhere in the midwest but it's fixed.

You can determine whether you have a 2000 or 3000 series very easily.

The 2000 has an external filter-- looks like an engine oil filter.

The 3000 has only internal filters.

Never worked on a 2000, it may or may not be the same for diagnostic purposes as the 3000.

With that said, on the 3000 and perhaps the 2000 you can do a diagnostic check from the driver's seat.

Key on, engine off.

Push up and down arrows at the same time. The shift pad will say O L.

Push the up and down arrows again. The shift pad will say d-1 and if there is a diagnostic code it will show numbers. If no code, it will be d-1 - -.

If there is a diagnostic code, after recording it, press the MODE button to bring up the next diagnostic code. Continue until you get - -.

Turn off the key to exit.

Look up the diagnostic codes on Allison's website or in your Allison manual.

Stay away from any RV dealer for anything that is not house related. You need to see an Allison dealer ASAP. The Allison computer will store any trouble codes.

you should always shift to neutral before shifting to drive or reverse. You will need to take it to a Freightliner or Allison dlr to trouble shoot your problem though as rv dlr's in general dont work on the chassis.
