Anyone switch from a fifth wheel?

Would love to hear why you switched and how satisfied you are with your decision.

We switched from a dually and a 40' toy hauler to a 40' motorhome and 18' cargo trailer.
Main reason was we were overweight with the TH being towed by a 1 ton dually. Simple math,
we had an 8K lb truck pulling a 18K trailer. Now we have a 30K motorhome pulling a 8K trailer.
Which do you think would be safer?

While we hope to get a different MH in a couple of years we have HUGE counter space

Yep we just finished switching from a 5ver and a TC. We traded both and the truck for a new class A MH.

This makes our 7th RV over 30 years and our second Class A. Having done 2 TTs, 1 TC, 1 5ver, 1 Class C and the first class A we think we may have this stuff figured out now. Taken us long enough!

I think we are done-- (and pretty well broke) 🙂

After 6 and 1/2 years with a 33' fiver, we switched 6 years ago to a 35' DP. The fiver was too much trouble for this old guy to set up. Now we spend more nights at Walmarts, rest areas, and other no charge and no hook-up spots. Both MH and fivers have their advantages but, at least for us, the MH is the only way we could continue to RV.

We owned a 37 foot Titanium fifth wheel for years and pulled it with Chevy crew cab dually with the 8 foot bed. After staying a month trying to drive around the streets of Key West with that dually we determined that a motorhome with a Jeep Wrangler toad was the way to go. That was the decision point that got us out of the fifth wheel and into a motor home. We haven't looked back and we full time!

With the sink covers on, I have 4' 6" of counter top. With the stove top covered you can add another 2' to that. Once in awhile I feel like there isn't enough room, but most times everything is fine. I do also have the table top to use if needed.

Switched from a 32 ft Montana 5th wheel to a 30 ft Class c with 2 slides over 8 yrs ago. Made the change because DW could no longer ride in the truck due to health. It was either try something different or stop traveling. We have put 41k on MH and has worked out well for us. I drive and her & dog rest on couch.

We switched to a MH from a 32ft 2 slide f'ver and have never regretted the change.Our current coach doesn't have slides and hopefully in the near future finances will allow a change in that.

We always wanted to be able to take our Harley or SXS with us and I really wasn't comfortable double towing.The MH allows us to take our toys or wifes altima.

I Guess what really drove the change home for me personally was a trip to KY Speedway.We arrived at the campground around nine at night in a pouring rain storm.With the MH I simply parked, Leveled the coach with the leveling jacks and started generator never leaving the drivers seat.
If we were in the F'ver Things would of been much different.

We went from a 33' HR Presidential 3 slide to the present 2007 HR 4 slide Endeavor. We switched because we were traveling more and needed to take all the critters with us. Take a look at the signature. Just could cram the 3 dogs in the truck and put the cats in the fiver.

When we go into a well appointed large fiver, we do miss the fiver. There is really more livable space in a large four slide fiver than in a 40' MH. When we look at large new fivers we especially miss the under storage. The height of the under storage in our MH is a bit short. Heck you could stash the grandkids and their sleeping bags in the storage area of many fivers. I could drive more miles at a faster mph in the fiver/truck combo. Big fivers have more inside storage than our MH even if some of it requires a step stool.

On the other hand we wouldn't go back to a fiver. Our Jeep toad is much preferable to a big 3500 Ram for sightseeing, shopping and general use. It is easier to unhitch the toad than the truck. We do like everything on one level. The view is better from the MH. Our MH is built better than our fiver was. Don't know if that is true or not with new fivers.

We didn't exactly switch but, we had 3 5th wheels on the very short list to full time with. Then was saw the Winnebago Journey 40U we currently own and KNEW that this was the unit for us to full time in. So painting yourself into a corner by saying that you want this specific type of RV can be counter productive.
