Bad things that happen on the road?

Greetings one and all,

I have read a large number of RV stories about the Motorhome Lifestyle with great enjoyment and interest. One thing that has surprised me is there is almost no mentions of bad things that happen on the road.

We know there are people out there who’s a taco short of a Fiesta platter. Those who think “gas guzzler, polluter, money bags, Richy-Rich and general Bozo”! They drive by this big beautiful 40’+ motorhome and some people think “wow how great is that, I’d sure love to have one of those”! While others are thinking “wow who do they think they are lets run em off the road and steal their stuff” !:)

• When you’re on the open road do people ever mess with you?
• When your parked getting groceries or at a stop light or fast food place. Are you ever bothered or find your coach being messed with?

I’m just curious because “stuff happens” and wonder if it happens very often to RVers?

Fuel up in the truck lanes and panhandlers don't bother you, I guess truck drivers don't like beggars.:)

No problem except for one panhandler begging for money for gas at a truck stop. Said he had to get to TX to see his dying mother. Someone posted a good answer on this forum. They said they told the guy "I'll call the police to help you get to TX"... the guy BEGGED him not to call the police for help and miraculously sped away in his car that supposedly was out of gas! We are always aware of our surroundings and don't stop if it doesn't look safe.

Dodging tornados one night in Louisiana and got far enough away, i decided to stop at a Rest area. Got out and saw a law officer sitting behind us and i went over and asked if the storm was going to miss us and he said yes. Told him i was very tired and he said, go ahead and go to bed. He said i or another officer will be here all night, we stay at Rest areas on the interstates all night to keep panhandlers and other people away from people spending the night!!Spent the night and next morning went over and thanked him for his service. He said no problem, We want people visiting our state not to be bothered!!!Never forgot that night!!

I had one guy insist on harassing me on the road. After midnight driving through Ohio. He kept slowing down and blocking me from passing. Any time he got next to a car, he would slow down. On more than one occasion, the car he was next to began to slow down to let him go by but then he would slow down even more. When both cars slowed to 40 mph, the car that was next to him would realize what was going on and speed back up, so as to minimize the impact. This lasted for about 20 miles. Unfortunately, I did not have my cell phone with me, so I could not call for police assistance. Anytime I tried to slow down and let him go, then he would slow down. Finally it turned out that a different car passed me, so I moved over and stuck on his tail, which trapped the car that was harassing me. Once I got passed him, he moved over and followed me and tried to pass me. Fortunately there was no one in front of me, so I sped up. He tried to stick with me, but couldn't keep up. I put a few miles between him and me before I slowed back down. Never saw him again.

nothing to get steamed about. rare instances of cars parking too close to the front of us, making it hard to pull out.
occasional "herding" by folks who seem to want to cozy up alongside of us when we're parked in the boondocks.
a few panhandlers when parked at truck stops. two or three in 15 years, I mean.

We were traveling down the highway that runs along the interstate, there was a wreck or something and all the interstate traffic was diverted to the highway. Well we were going about 60 and a Semi from the interstate sitting at the stop sign decides to pull out but swings wide in to our lane, Very lucky we are here to day I have seen To many accidents on the roads over the last few years involving poorly skilled truck drivers. I avoid as much traffic as possible.

We've had a few, that I've mentioned before and several, forgotten about.
Getting older now and not sure if I project victim or what.
Like to think I have a pretty good sixth sense. If my hair stand up and I say what the heck, we are out of there threat unidentified. I stay with the coach or vise versa while wife goes into the sore etc, except if things feel right.
Go into a rest stop and if it ain't right we are gone, if we even pull in. Sometimes you gotta. I will walk around the rig while she does whatever, maybe cook a fast meal. I've been, in the corner before, though.
As far as a baseball bat, or whatever, there is no such thing as a concealed weapon.

My wife and I are both law enforcement and we don't project Victim when we go places. Watch where you go and act like you own the place. People with evil on their mind usually pick their victims carefully.

It happens, though not as often as you would expect. We had a clown IMO try to cause us into a severe evasive maneuver by swerving within literally inches of the drivers very front corner, encroaching into our lane then swerving back to his and sped off.

We were in the far right lane. I moved enough to probably stop a collision but not enough to lose control. Too much of a wheel correction and it would have been me out of control. It might sound stupid on my part, but from now on if someone is dumb enough to pull a stunt like that again I'm holding my lane.

Another time was at a rest stop with our fiver. Two men keep staring at our rig while my wife was in the rest room. They kept creeping closer from a angle just behind me in the driver seat. It was summer and I had the window down. Well my little dog had enough when they got about 10' away and sounded the alarm. They took that as a sign the gig was up. They turned and left. They looked very suspicious. The dog was the least of their worry.

Most people never have any problems. But it happens. I do what I can to protect my family.

No issues so far, watch where you park and recheck your hitch before leaving, if you tow. We also conceal carry and have our NRA stickers on both our truck and fiver as a hopeful deterrent. Travel safe.

I have never had a problem in over 40 years of using an RV. And whats this thing about "avoiding rest areas"? And I try to travel at night, less traffic. Maybe I am missing something.....I have been told that I had a nice looking ride!

Parked at a Cracker Barrel one day,far back from the restaurant (all the RV spots were parked full of cars) and some "nice " persons parked almost against the front of me. There were plenty of empty spots near the store. I had to unhook my toad to back up enough to get out.
