Buying a Former Rental Class C. How many of us out there?

While researching these pages for my next Motor Home I saw a few threads discussing Rentals, most were Pros and Cons but very few posts from people who had purchased one.

I thought it may be a good resource and helpful to hear from these people. The good, the bad, what they liked and what they didnโ€™t. Also if they had any problems, things they changed, if they would recommend this to others or do it again.

Here is my story: I am not a novice, having owned a Class A for more than 15 years and doing the camping thing with my wife and two daughters, I can say โ€œbeen there done thatโ€ But life changes, and I sold everything so I have been away from this for several years. Starting over I lurked here for a while and got a lot of good insight then went looking.

My criteria was: A Class C within by budget, less than 30 feet so I can keep it at home, saving storage $, a rear bed, and a lot of storage space.

What fit that was Winnebago, Fleetwood and a few others, what I found mostly was Jamboree / Tioga 26Q. In the year models 2002 thru 2006. I did my home work looking at NADA and other sites to find the fair prices for the models that I was looking for.

After several months of searching the internet, Craigslist, private ads and Dealerships for a Class C that suited my budget and needs, this is what I found. Of the dozen or so I inquired about. Most were upsidedown in their payments, owing more than they were worth. All were on Ford Chassis, 7 needed tires, all had the original 7 to 10 year old tires, and they all needed repair of the awning and most needed some work inside or out and the maintenance records were sketchy, but most had low mileage. The Dealerships offerings were better but they had a profit margin to maintain so I got older models within my budget or huge up sales that didnโ€™t work for me.

My next step was looking at the rental market for sales. In my area there are 2 large companies that have rental sales, Cruise America and El Monte RV,who also sell Class A RVs.

First up was El Monte RV Their units are production RVs that are made by major manufactures, with TV antennas and hookups inside and out, Ducted A/C and heat, 2 house batteries, a rear ladder and parts are readily available from those manufactureโ€™s. I looked at their web site and it detailed their warranty and what was checked and serviced by their factory trained technicians. The unit I looked at was like new inside, the upholstery on all the seats was new as was the floor mat in the driverโ€™s area, it had a new mattress, still in plastic and a new bedspread. All of the curtains were new also. Newer (2010 mfg date) tires with 98% rubber and the mileage was ninety thousand (90,000).

Then there was Cruise America: Their units that I looked at seemed to be Spartan,no TV antenna or hookups for one,non-ducted A/C,small counter space and only one battery, no rear ladder for inspection and maintenance of roof and built just for them, they were all โ€œrefreshedโ€ their words not mine. They offered extended warranties at a huge cost. All had high mileage, one hundred and thirty thousand (130,000) or more and the price range seemed a little high. The sales staff had a take it or leave it attitude and were not very forthcoming when asked about maintenance records and service, they claim to have proprietary info in those records,It doesn't seem to be a problem for El Monte RV.

At El Monte RV I took a test ride; This Unit was a 2006 Tioga 26Q on a Chevrolet Chassis it rode
Drove and handled much better than the Fords that I had driven. It also had more leg room and was quieter. We got back and I asked about the service and maintenance on it, the salesman, Joey, handed me a 28 page single spaced document asked if I wanted some coffee or something to drink and said โ€œread this and if you have any questions I will answer themโ€.

It detailed everything that was done before and after each rental, the mileage, generator hours and hours billed. Each time it was washed and detailed inside and outside, all fluids were checked and replenished if needed, the holding tanks were washed, LP system was checked for leaks, all torque on wheel lugs were checked, brakes front and rear checked for wear and cracks, pressure in tires, all appliances, generator oil, lights inside and outside, the list goes on and on.

It also listed all oil changes, coolant change, trans service, fuel injector service and cleaning, fuel filters, air filter, new brakes, all repairs and replacements all with date, mileage and time spent in complete detail from day one to when it was pulled from the rental fleet and was refurbished. I have a complete service record on this vehicle. Also the service records on the Onan Generator, all oil changes, air filter and spark plug replacement with hours and date. I negotiated a good deal with them and am very happy with my purchase.

It came with a 1 yr. 12000 mile power train warranty and 30 day on all appliances. It also came with a 28 page maintenance record that detailed everything. Also the original sales packet from Fleetwood with the manual and serial numbers on all appliances, refrigerator, microwave, furnace, AC, water heater, etc. and the manual for the Chassis. I have had no problems with it so far.

(ON EDIT) 5 Years and close to 14000 miles.Just Scheduled Maintenance and new tires, old ones were at the 5 year mark and I wanted new Michelin LTX M/S2s.

There were a few things that it didnโ€™t have as it was a rental and the ones from private parties did have.
โ€ข Power steps, outside Stereo/CD donโ€™t need or want them.
โ€ข An Awning, this I wanted and had installed. A Swivel Seat and a new Window in The Door that I installed.
โ€ข Wheel Simulators, I like the looks so I had them installed and at the same time had Tire Man valve stem kit put on.
โ€ข Replaced the Chinese WFCO with a US Made converter/charger
โ€ข It came with mini blinds and not the day/night that most have, these are more practical and have a lot less failure.
  • It also came with Stainless Steel sinks, easier to maintain than the cheap plastic ones that come in the noncommercial units.

I am very happy with my Rig, it suites my needs and it was in my Budget range, I think I got a good deal.

So if you bought a rental please share your experience here for others to use as a resource.
Or if there are any other questions that have not been covered in these pages, just ask, there are many helpful people on this thread.

We bought an ex-rental from CanaDream back in March of this year. We got a 2014 Forest River Sunseeker 2650CDW. The motorhome was terrific. The service was a nightmare. The salesman was very disorganized and at one point tried to sell us a unit that he had already sold to someone else. The business office lady stopped returning my phone calls because she had a Botox emergency for a week. And, I am not 100% sure that the full sales team was not drunk when we went to pick it up at 11 am.

With all of that on the table, we paid less than 40% of new for a 3-year-old rig. I got to review all of the service history. We have used it for 15 weekends plus our two-week vacation with not an issue.

I initially went to this motorhome because I wanted a four-season motorhome. The salesman told me it was good to -30c and after camping in it to -15c I think the motorhome could but I really don't want to get much colder.

Thanks IAMICHABOD, you got it to work for me.

I might add that my neighbors and friends are all amazed at my rig when I've showed it to them last couple days. Some of you may not know/remember that CA has a nice referral program.... if they mention my name and buy a unit, I get like $300 check for referring them.... beer's on me!

Number 75 here, just took delivery of my Cruise America (Thor/Four Winds) 2011 27G and loving it.

Did a thorough inspection last Wednesday, Dave and Wayne at CA Mesa got the list of findings fixed on Thursday and I got it Friday. The inspection found: both batteries low to dead status, 6" crack in roof sealant, broken kitchen window latch, broken dip stick, and Velcro stitching broken on one window curtain. All were fixed and/or replaced.

Couldn't be happy with Dave and Wayne's help through the sale. I decided to not get their awning, since I wanted to see if I could go longer one than the 16 footer they had and one that has a protective cover when closed.

Will be adding a backup camera soon and probably a tire pressure monitoring system. Then going for the inaugural shakedown camping trip next weekend at a nearby Maricopa county park and do some mountain biking now that weather in Phoenix is cooler.

Happy trails....

Thanks for the write up on your experience with your purchase,I found the same thing when I looked at Cruise America, they didn't know much and didn't seem to care.

It sounds like you have started to make it your own with the mods you have done and what you have planed, good luck.

The 19G was discussed on page # 38 on this thread,it may be of help to you. Click here for that

Good Luck and have fun, after a few trips tell us how everything is going.

Yup agree with everything that is written about them. For me I am not really a camper, in fact I think I have decided that I HATE CAMPING :-), I use the RV as a mobile office, kitchen, storage but hate sitting around soaking up the sun! Since I love exploring dumping tanks everyday is not a big deal as I am usually moving everyday.

The fuel tanks seem fine to me for the MPG that I am getting but will do my usual when at 3/4 start looking and when at a half refuel when I am in the mountains. Plus if I am really putting in the miles I carry a extra tank or 2. The rear bumper on this thing is crazy well built so I am thinking of mounting a couple gas tanks there.

The bed is interesting - you could have two people sleep in it but it is tight with the shape of the nose. Most times it is just me so not a huge deal.

Hopefully heading out to shoot some Northern Lights and stars this weeks so will see how things shake down for shooting!

Well I guess I am the next one on the list.

I bought a 2011 Majestic 19G from Cruise Canada, same as Cruise America.

So far I am a happy camper (pun intended). I was VERY impressed with the build quality, NOT so impressed with the salesperson. Can you say lack of person skills, lack of product knowledge and VERY disorganized!!!

Made an appointment to look at the RV almost two weeks before hand. It had to go through a out of province inspection first, then a detailing and when I showed up no detailing was done. In fact there was still all the dishes and camping supplies in the RV, which he left as it was too much work to get them out. We told him about somethings we wanted done before I would get the cheque and he got them done with a minute to spare but I know he did NO extra!

Then when I asked him things like how many watts was the solar panel was he said small, and when I asked about a vent in the bathroom and how to open it he said it was always open (in fact you have to push up but I could not get it to move as it was so stiff).

I am VERY glad that I had an RV before this as that was the extent of the knowledge that he had to share and if I did not know things already like where to find the hot water tank bypass, or that it would have a hose connection for winterizing I would never of known to look for them. I got it off the lot and went through adjusting and checking things out as he was NO HELP AT ALL!! That being said he is not the only sales person that I have run into that has had ZERO knowledge on the product that they sold. One other salesperson at another dealer told me that if I wanted the window to stay closed while driving that I would need to cut a stick to make it stay as the window latches actually were not to hold the window closed :h

My plan is at the price I got it for is to invest some more money into fixing it up to what I want and be happy. I have enough in the bank to do a major repair if need be, but I am hoping the warranty is going to look after anything big on the engine and transmission if it comes up in the next year.

So far an alignment and re-packed wheel bearings and a burnt out bulb has been all that my mechanic could find.

For me new foam in the bed, carpet and a few small things have been done to help make it more like home.

In the near future storm windows and a spice rack and towel bar are next on the list. I guess they don't figure tourists use towels :B

What number am I now for the Former Renters Club???

I just put a deposit down on a 2011 CA 27G, should be ready next week. Have to decide between now and then to have them install an awning or not. The first couple upgrades I think will be a backup camera and a tire monitoring system.

RE: Buying a Rental Class C. How many of us out there? (Long)

Have you thought of the 27G instead of the 23 or 28A from Cruise America? Having rented a 28A first we are very pleased with the 27G and they often have a lot less mileage as they were not rented out so much (they did not do the 28A for a few years which was designed for a family and appear to have got it wrong as they stopped). It is slightly narrower about 1 foot and also only 29 ft long. Ideal for 2 people. We wanted a walk around bed hence the bigger size. The sink and toilet lay out is far better - toilet on the floor and you are not perched up in the air as the 28A and I think also the 23.Good size stowage locker also front right next to the door.
Added two solar panels and boondock for days no problem until the water runs low. Stowage space was very important for us as we live in Europe, so have to have everything with us all the time when in the US
We did not buy a awning either for it and have now decided that was a good move having seen people with problems in high winds and the sun in the "wrong place"
On the back we have a Rowdy SSR 150 scooter which has proven ideal for excursions when parked up, including climbing up mountains with 2 up, in the Chisos mountains at Big Bend.
Both the 28 and 27 have lots of spare stowage space below the front bed end and the top of the water tank. We have fitted a shoe cupboard there which works well.
You will find Cruise America not only have a plastic cover over the mattress, but we also found an inner plastic cover over the mattress! Both removed to stop sweating and Ikea bed slats fitted below for extra comfort:) Mattress found in perfect condition due to the covers.
Lots of room under the sink in the 27G as well as long as you remove the existing panels and redesign. we now have more storage and also a invertor fitted below with the solar controller there as well. You can also get weight forward by moving the air trunkings slightly under the seats to create space.

hope that helps and does not confuse with the extra model!

Thanks Cencerrita ! Yes, I have been looking into the 27G now that CA has more available, a month ago they barely had any. Forgive my newness/ignorance but what are the "air trunkings"? and I'm assuming you're talking about the dinette seats?
