Changing coolant 2000, V10. Help!!!

HI,

I want to change coolant in my V10.
I know it should be 50/50 antifreeze/ distilled water.
When I drain system, I only get 3 gal. of the eight it holds. I know that it is not possible to drain all the coolant, but, how can I be sure I have the correct mixture.
I removed the lower hose to drain
I have flushed three times, with city water.
Any help would big help.

  • Did you open the valve that directs water to your dash heater coil?
  • I would rinse it again with distilled water for starters. Get 20 gallons from the warehouse store. I would have recommended this from the start.

Then pour 4 gallons of antifreeze in while it pushes the water out. Top off with distilled or 50/50 antifreeze depending if you seem to lose any antifreeze in the process.

You can check the mix with a tester from the local autoparts store.
  • I drain as much as I can out then add full strength coolant only. Run engine until it mixes. Then check with coolant hydrometer. Usually gets enough coolant to get to "0"F.
  • There are 2 drain plugs on the sides of the block. Usually hex key pipe plugs. Are you sure your coolant capacity is 8 gallons?
  • I just drain flush a few times with distilled water drain a last time and pour in 4 gal of anti-freeze or as much as I can get in. Run engine to get air out and fill to line with water or anti-freeze if I still have some left over.
  • Thanks for all the help.
Will flush a few more times with d water, add coolant, and check.
