Thanks NM driver I looked up Tehachapi campground looks like it's going to be in the 70's. We need a break from this heat.
As above, hopefully you'll arrive later in the week. I'm talking to a friend camping at the Kern now and they are in the upper 90's

I think tomorrow is the last hot day for the rest of the week. At least that is what the weather just reported for central California. Sacramento hit 100 today and is supposed to be hot tomorrow, and then 80's the rest of the week.

You got it, 40, 58, 99.
This is the ONLY way to go!!!

Why would one want to drive 60 miles south to go through LA traffic only to drive 70+ miles back north through a 5000'+ pass?

(later)
Just for yucks I ran the mileage between the two routes:

- Havasu to 10 to LA, to the 210, to the 5 and over the pass to 58 & 99 junction: 435 Miles
- Havasu to 40 to 58 to 58&99 junction: 314 Miles, not including traffic and time

If you decide to pick up the I-210 in San Bernardino headed west into LA County to hook up with the I-5 going north, don't do it in the morning. I believe you will be disappointed with Bakersfield but that's just IMHO. Go Drillers!

Avoid, avoid, avoid, Did i say avoid? The traffic will be terrible. Hwy 58 will be the easiest. I believe you can pick it up in Barstow.

X 2 - be careful at Kramer Junction, a lot of trucks turning onto and off the road. A little bit of two lane on 58 around Kramer Junction. Stop in Tehachapi if you are looking for a nice cool spot for the night.
