class c towing

Will a 30 ft class c with the ford v-10 tow a 1/2 ton p/u 4 down without problems?

    Hi,

The weight of the motorhome loaded, ready to travel.
The GVWR and GCWR of the motorhome.
    The weight of the truck.
The weight rating of the tow hitch on the motorhome.

Assuming the weights are within boundaries, you still have the issue of getting that vehicle down the road. We pulled an approx. 4000 lb Jeep for many years behind our V10 E450 and it did just fine for the most part. However, when we headed west and hit the elevations of the Rockies, that was a completely different situation.

Depending upon where and how you intend to tow, the V10/chassis "could" be up to the task.
  • As others have said, more info is needed, both on MH and the 1/2 ton.
Since its a 30' Ford it will be on the E450 chassis, GVWR 14050 or 14500. GCWR 20000 or 22000 , depending on year. Hitch rating 3500, 5000 or 7500 depending on MH manufacturer.
Weight of pickup, I'm looking out window at one neighbours 1/2 short cab short box work truck, sure doesn't weigh anything close to the other crew cab fully loaded one.

It probably would tow one, but do your homework.

  • Newer E450 motorhomes can all do it, and the large RV makers (THOR and Forest River) include a 7500# hitch to make use of the 22,000 GCWR.

Non-E450 Class Cs (i.e E350 or Chevy 4500) typically only have a 3500# hitch, and may also be GCWR limited.

Older E450s may also not have enough hitch to match its GCWR, and some can be easily upgraded but some cannot.
  • Hi,

As has been pointed out, we really can't answer without more specifics, so you'll have to do your homework.

Here's a list of some things you need to research:

The weight of the motorhome loaded, ready to travel.
The GVWR and GCWR of the motorhome.
    The weight of the truck.
The weight rating of the tow hitch on the motorhome.

Also, do you know if the pickup truck in mind CAN be towed 4 down? Some can, some can't.

But after all is said and done, I would think you'd be pushing several of the published ratings. Maybe if it's a non-slide model motorhome, you might have the capacity to do it and stay under the rating limits.

  • I think you will be psuhing it. A 3,000-4,000 will be better than a heavier 1/2 ton
  • There is no correct yes or no answer. It depends on which class C and which pickup.
