Dash AC

I've noticed my dash AC isn't blowing too cold so far this year. As its getting warmer outside, I want to remedy this. I've seen a lot of YouTube videos and seen the AC charging cans in Autozone. My question is this: there is a capped line that is clearly marked with an "H" meaning high side (not the one I need to charge the unit) and another smaller one that isn't clearly marked with anything. I need to charge using the low side line. This smaller cap has a green oil inside and on fitting. Might this be the low side? I have a 99 Holiday Rambler on a Ford F53 chassis if it helps.

When mine stopped blowing cool air I bought a kit on sale at Adv Auto for $20, had a can of 134 with dye in it, a ultraviolet light pen, and a regular can of 134 with the hose and gauge. I found the leak immediately with the lite pen and replaced the leaking trinary switch. That was about 4 years ago and it still blows cold. I never use the roof AC's when driving unless it is 95 or higher outside. Made sure you find and fix the leak first.
  • The green oil you refer to is probably green dye that has prevously been put in to find a leak. Some cans of 134A already have the dye in it just for that purpose which means you probably have located the service port you to charge from.

The cap may have a L on it and yes they are two different sizes plus the low pressure line is usually larger. Since it's working somewhat, one can will be more than enough to top it off. Go for it.
  • Do take a few minutes to inspect the system before you install refrigerant. Mine had a 1/8 by 1/2 hole in the condenser.

  • For r134a vehicles the Hi/Lo charge ports are different sizes. This means you cannot make a mistake. Find the port that the can adapter fits on and go for it.
