Dogs in RV

We have been off the road for a few years but now ready to travel again but now we have a dog. For you fellow dog lovers what do you do with your dog when you are out of the vehicle and can,t take your dog like a restaurant or store. In some area it is illegal to leave a pet in a vehicle. Looking for answers. Thanks

We leave our dogs our FW all the time. They are too big to take along on day trips. We leave the radio on, A/C or heat on and they are fine, have stayed alone for over 8 hours. For some reason a lot of folks get theor knickers in a not about an RV will become super heated in the summer sun in 30 minutes if the A/C shut down. We live in Alabama and our FW sits uncovered in the sun all day. I have yet to walk in the RV and it's any hotter than the outside air. Our dogs will sit outside for houra and not get a heat stroke so I seriously doubt they would if the A/C were to shut down for a couple of hours. Just my two cents, now bash away.

Buy one of those service dog vests and take them along just about anywhere. You can even get the service dog certificate on line 🙂

Even if you are kidding and it does not sound like it, this is the worst advice I have ever seen on this Forum and nothing to joke about. The folks that cheat and buy a jacket and fake certificate online should be prosecuted for fraud.

Do you also recommend getting a fake Handicapped parking placard? That little stunt usually comes with a $1,000 fine when you get caught.

Our dog stays in the B when he can't go with us. He's crated (the only time he ever stays in a crate) and we close most of the shades and blinds and leave the AC or Fantastic fan on to keep the temperature safe for him. In eleven years of RV'ing we've never encountered any problem with leaving our dogs in the RV. But as others have said, it does matter a bit whether you have a barker or not.

Our dog would wait for us for ever, it was our responsibility to make her comfortable. heat and air as require.
But for the most part she went with us.

We FTd for 7 yrs.....dog was a Border Collie/Lab mix (78#) and was 4 yrs old when we hit the road

If we couldn't take her with us (going to see an attraction or such) she would stay 'Home' (our 5th wheel) and sleep/relax/lick her bottom or whatever a dog does at home while their people are gone ----just like she did prior to us traveling


Otherwise she went with us in the truck.....if that involved some shopping etc she laid down in her seat and relaxed/people watched etc. just like she did prior to our travels.

As she aged we shortened our time she was left at 'home' alone.....our activities were done with her needs in mind, just like we did when we came off the road and back into a S&B .

I've lost a few window shades whenever I leave my dogs in the unit. they seem to think they own the place

Some of this depends on the dog. Some will be quiet and others bark as soon as you leave. I put a digital thermometer in the windshield dash for folks to see so they know the dog is not baking. In Oregon it is legal to break out a qindow to save an animal in distress. If temp goes above 80 we eat outside with the dog maybe a park.

My RV is my house so we leave them in the house as long as they are not at risk of too high of temperatures. If it's too hot we would never trust an RV ac unit or the wiring or a generator or even shore power. One of the reasons that we went to as resi frig is because of the fire danger and having the dogs alone at times. It's rare but when it does happen they often burn to the ground.

We are in an A class and is not quite affected by the sun as quickly as a B but we start the generator in the warm weather and run the roof AC. Do the same in cold and run the roof AC but in heat mode.

Never had trouble myself. Maybe lucky or maybe just my travel style?

Trained the dog from a young age to be calm and sleep well in the car and truck. To be fair to the dog that means a lot of exercise first, not just moving from one sedentary spot to another.

My travel style doesn't involve eating out or shopping, or visiting indoor attractions.

If my dog isn't welcome, I spend money elsewhere.
