06' just hit 33,000. Sat all winter, oil changed a few weeks ago. Noticed a ping, chirp, sound, etc? from engine while on recent trip. All gauges were good and ran strong. Put some 93 octane in. Will see what happens.

If you have a scan gauge or something similar, you could check for codes.

If it sat all winter, did you put gasoline stabilizer in it and run it long enough to get through the system? If not, you might want to try your generator while you are at it.

For your original problem, I like to use a fuel system cleaner every now and then to avoid any build-up.

Yes and both were started up multiple times during winter.

30+ years of automotive engineering disagrees with you.

I qualified my response by saying "ping" from pre-ignition can be cured by higher octane. Why the pre-ignition is occurring is hard to diagnose, but likely it is from carbon build up inside the combustion chamber.

Higher octane fuel will not ignite until a higher in cylinder temperature is reached, such as an actual spark event nor just a "hot spot".

In my case, anecdotal evidence proves I am correct.

Nothing. Adding 93 octane won't do a thing except cost you extra money.

Not true if it is a pre-ignition ping.

I always run premium in my 4.6L E150 when going through the Smokey mountains, towing or not.

It doesn't. Google it.

Far more productive to find what is actually causing the problem and appropriately address it. Not sure about other motors but the V-10 runs just fine on 87 octane {regular} and never needs 93 octane.

Flat land out west and Smokey Mountains are about the same, now Rockies are something else.
So big a world, so little time to see.

Was the sound while accelerating only? If so adding 93 should solve the problem as the gas today has a bunch of stuff that degrades after sitting that long. If all the time then the above by MichF and using a hose to your ear may help find the location.

My thoughts also. Noticed mostly accelerating or up incline road way. Very faint sound. Hopefully 93 will blow old gas out of system. Will also check belts, pulleys. Etc.

A rythmic chirp is usually the serpentine belt tensioner. Sometimes a little lithium spray on the spring is all it needs. They can chirp a Lon time before going bad.

Pinging will be intermittent, and worst under high load, low RPM like starting to climb a hill before it downshifts. #1 cause of pinging in the v10 is a dirty MAF sensor, which gets dirty because tensor filter isn't seated properly or the gasket is crushed. Or you're running a K & N filter

If it's really detonating/pinging, the 93 should help. If not you could have problems with a sticking EGR valve or sensor issue.
But it's probably just old gas. It may take a tank or two to work it out.

that's my first thought after sitting. Not a Ford fan but it is a strong engine.

Could be an exhaust manifold leak. Check the exhaust manifold for broken studs on rear passenger side.
