Floor Plan Pet Peeves

As my wife and I are looking at multiple Class A DPs, we've found so many floor plans that would be great, "If only...." Our two top pet peeves:

1) Can't watch the TV from the couch. Really? Do they really think I want to sit down after a long day, pick up a glass of my favorite beverage, and watch TV from the dinette?

2) No shelf beside the bed. Are there really that many people who don't need a place to put your glasses, hearing aids, CPAP machine, or that great book you've been reading just before you turn out the lights? Where do they expect us to put those things?

Can you add to the list? What are the floor plan features that have made you think, "What were they thinking?"

Surprised that you could not find a floorplan that resolves these two particular issues. In my sub-30 foot C, the TV is across from the sofa, and there was a nightstand on each side of the primary bed, with power outlets. My late wife would havenever let me buy a motorhome that did not satisfy these two requirements, as well as her need for kitchen workspace and pantry storage, and wardrobe. But the shopping experience was almost 15 months. Keep looking.

Even Camper vans with porta potties have a curtain or folding door

Me either but I don't want my commode sitting in the hallway. Doors, I don't mind. In fact I think you're right. They all have a door somewhere that gives privacy from the living area or bedroom area. Surely you've seen those that have a toilet sitting open in the hallway.

We have a trailer not a motorhome however:
We only considered units with 2 comfortable chairs that faced the entertainment unit.

We did not have any bedside shelves but I just finished making and installing shelves on each side of the bed to fix that problem.

A motorhome as a residence is a matter of compromise.

We got our long sleeper sofa, big galley, dinning table on pssgr side, split bathroom, sofa side end end table and bed side night stands ..... ....................by not having any slides!!

You know, you just need to look at more models. There is a design, or one that can be modified, to fit anyone's needs. It took us 18 months to find our Phaeton LH with all the right stuff we wanted with the perfect floor plan and only had to make one small change.

Keep looking...you'll find your dream eventually.

My dining table is on the pass side and I like it there. My bathroom is in the hall but there is a sliding door between the living area and another between the bed room. I have 2 night stands and an entertainment center over one of them and a tv and a vanity with a wet sink and a lighted mirror also in the bedroom + TV is behind the Mirror. What I don't have and never will are 2 couches taking up 1/2 the floor space----that right there makes zero sense to me. I also have no slides which took me awhile to find one that way.

This one is a matter of personal taste. I really dislike having a skylight in the bedroom unless it can be covered by a shade when sleeping in. I know some folks like waking up to the first light of sun, but for me those early morning hours are best spent with the eyes closed!

I love the idea of Murphy beds. I think they would be so much better than the power beds that fold up. I have seen some very nice chairs that have a back that folds forward to allow a bed to fold down over them so you have a sitting room or TV viewing or work space with a portable table when bed is up and perfect bedroom with regular mattress when bed is down. Also allows access to dressers when slide is in. Leisure Travel Vans has a great murphy bed configuration that could be beautiful in a bedroom with a couple of mods.

I love our driver's door, and wonder why many more coaches don't have them.

Yes that is a friend's pet peeve too!

So much so that I also wanted my dining area to the passenger side, so I would be looking out the window at my campground, not the one next door. Having the cooking area on the passenger side is also important!

Less important is having the RR on the drivers side (no window anyway)

I did see a fifth wheel with dual bathrooms, one in the front has full bath, while the one towards the garage area had a small tub, small sink, and toilet. Great - because getting my daughter and her wheelchair up to the forward bath would be really difficult. . .

It seems like most designs put the TV to the back of one of the dinette chairs.

We also lament the absence a night stand on one and sometimes both sides of the bed.

I don't get the design of the drawers in the bedroom of many of the 2004-2006 coaches we are looking at. Its usually in a slide so maybe that has something to do with it. You have a set of drawers on the bottom and they are deeper than the two sets on top of them. So the bottom set is almost like a step. The higher drawers as so shallow they are almost useless.

I also wonder with all these roomy slide outs, why they never seem to put one in the rear wall of the RV?

Actually you can buy a Class A, B, or C with a rear slide. Thor makes the A.
Rear slides are very common on travel trailers.
