A gasoline tax map that explains a lot

by Ken Cohen

In last weekโ€™s post about ExxonMobilโ€™s 2013 earnings, I noted that we earned about 5.5 cents for every gallon of gasoline and other petroleum products we refined, shipped, and sold in the United States.
Consider this: The federal and state and local governments collected 40 to 60 cents per gallon in taxes.
The American Petroleum Institute just updated their map showing the combined local, state and federal tax rate in each state as of Jan. 1, when new taxes took effect.
API US MapThe federal gasoline tax is the same from coast-to-coast โ€“18.4 cents a gallon โ€“ which means any variations have been implemented by state and local governments.
The highest gasoline tax in the country is in California, where it now exceeds 70 cents a gallon. Combined with California-specific fuel-blending regulations that drive up refining costs, these taxes help make Golden State gasoline prices the most expensive in the country.
Several other states, such as New York, Connecticut, and Hawaii, are close to California in terms of the fuel-tax burden their residents bear, though none has yet joined in crossing the 70-cent-per-gallon threshold.
I encourage you to study APIโ€™s map (click the graphic above to enlarge), or dig into its interactive version for state-and-local-level specifics.

No under Billy Boy Richardson NM spent road fund $$$$$$ to fund the FAILRUNNER so he could be green and run for
President, $$$$ to buy A fancy plane to fly him around the country. NM even owns hundred of miles of railroad track north to CO that we do not even use. We got miles of bad roads. Not as bad as MO,W-VA,and ID.

Dennis - my family has lived in S Cal for 100 years next year. I worked as a sales rep using the LA freeways for most of the last 50 years. Los Angeles freeways used to be wonderfully maintained. They were what the other cities of the World patterned themselves after to build their road system. There has been very heavy traffic on the LA freeways for decades. The roads started to seriously decline in the 1990's. The people in charge of maintenance either did not do their jobs or did not have the funds to do their jobs starting about that time. I have no idea which is the case. I suspect some of the problem is diverting funds to alternative transportation and projects that were supposed to help the traffic such as light rain, car pool lanes, bike lanes, rebates for hybrids, now rebates for electric cars, electric car charging stations and so on. These are all good ideas, but only if you maintain the basic method of transport which is still the roads.

Neglect is the answer not more traffic. Maybe New Mexicans are more down to earth and do the basics instead of living in nana land like many in the once great "golden State" do.

We have been camped in NM for several weeks. They have some of the lowest fuel taxes in the USA. Their roads are in very good condition. Compare that with Los Angles. All freeways in LA have been redesigned 4 wheel drive roads. LA roads are so bad that after the pounding I put my coach through six weeks ago I have sworn I will never drive the coach through that miserable place again. Oh, and California has the highest gas taxes in the USA. Go figure.

Sorry, but Los Angeles has more vehicles in their City than New Mexico has in their entire STATE !!...more vehicles mean more abuse to the roads infrastructure. Because of the traffic, the roads can't be shut down for very long, so most everything is a patch job. Vote for the new guy!....Dennis

Just wait until they pass a ice tax to pay for more salt and sand as we enter the new ice age.
The fuel taxes in California or their carbon tax have nothing to do with maintaining roads.
They want to force people out of vehicles and onto bicycles and their feet. All those people commuting a hundred miles per day will have to move into grass shacks so they can afford to feed Sacremento.

The stupid govt of the Communist wealth of VA decided we should pay a $100 fee/ yr because we have a Prius which, several years ago they gave us a bonus to buy due to gas shortages. BWAHAHA Wait, TN gas tax is under 40 cents but they have good roads. I 40 is really good.

The People's Republic of California will raise the gas tax between 16 and 76 cents per gallon according to my local paper (SGVT). This is because of the CARB requirements lately passed. Effective Jan 1, I believe.

This is on top of one of the highest gas taxes in the country.

What politician in this state can resist a pile of money existing someplace and not want to pry it loose for his own personal agenda?

Also, remember, a government project has a lifetime the same as a politician's attention span.

We used to have the most equitable taxes in the country. If your vehicle weighs more or travels faster, you use more gas and contribute more taxes. Sadly, that fictitious 'lock-box' those moneys were in were routinely raided for special projects having nothing to do with transportation. So with the money gone, the pols cry they need more $$$ for the transportation infrastructure.

On top of that, both the feds and the CA mandated cars with better MPG which resulted in less gas taxes, 'in order to save the planet'. More lost revenue.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program...

I just had an article come across my facebook feed today about our Scott Walker suggesting a sales tax instead of gas tax.
Thanks, Kay

Nothing is free, and I think everyone realizes that. In New Jersey the transportation fund is dead broke. We pay something like 2.5 million per mile of state road, yet they're not gold plated. More likely the double and triple dipping politicians are providing their key money contributors lucrative contracts while giving the tax payers the shaft.

So once again, facts paint a different picture of those "B*st*rd" oil companies. A mere 7.4% profit margin. The states will have to raise tax rates to help pay for roads, bridges, etc and when they do, the conversations at the pumps will still blame the oil companies.

Thanks to Sacramento, "The Governator", and our first in the nation climate change Cap and Trade law, oil and gas will be subjected to our "carbon tax" starting 1/1/15, which will in turn get passed directly to the consumer. Current governer is planning to use a chunk of that new revenue stream to fund his pet project High Speed Rail (which isn't high speed) Can't wait
