My wife and I ate looking at buying a Class "A" motor home to live in permanently. Would like info on the best manufacturers and anything people might think is useful. BTW we're not newbies to the RV world we've been pulling a trailer for years.

Have a look at some of the following sites. I realize they are US but you need to get a handle on your needs and wants relative to what is generally available.

Foretravel, Country Coach, Newmar, Tiffin are some to consider. We have a 2004 Country Coach Allure and have put over 100,000 miles on it. We full time.

I agree with the previous poster. There is a lot of good information on this forum with a little bit of searching. Look for threads that discuss brands of motor homes. Diesel vs gas. What length to buy. What floor plans to look at. What to look for when purchasing a used motorhome. Ownership costs.

You answered most of Brett's questions, but are you handy and capable of doing your own repairs? Also, new only or used... if used how old? At 40' you are looking at a Diesel Pusher... DP. For it to handle cold weather you need a mid to high end DP with AquaHot heating.

By clicking on "Class A Motorhomes" above your first post you can get to Johnny T's Sticky "First time buyers"... well worth reading. There is also a lot of info hidden in the "Advanced Search" above and then in the second area click on "Class A" before searching. I'd search for things like: AquaHot, CCC, 7 year old tires, RR10S, Girard or Girrard awning, heated tanks.......

At 40' it's hard to get enough CCC for Full Time use without having two axles on the rear... a tag axle. There is a "Full time RVing" section in the box at the top right. There is also a "Snowbird" section at the bottom of the same box which will help with where to go in the winter.

It's not just the best mfg. Stop and think about cars. Chevy makes cars from rinky dink little economy models to Cadillacs. So you need to look at manufacturers and the different models they build. I don't know of any of the better DPs that won't have generators.

Our budget is $200 000, it's for my wife and I. We were thinking maybe 40'. Not sure about sizes yet. We've just started looking. We plan on staying somewhat local right now, but I'd think 2500-5000km a rear driving. We would like to be mostly self sufficient, so I'd like an onboard generator.

I would heartily recommend, because you are Canadian and will live at least half your year in Canada, that you have a look at Triple E to see what they offer. Also NewMar is another very popular brand.

They both have a great reputation and enjoy a loyal following. Buy something that is popular with others rather than an odd ball that seems like a good deal.
