Use 5w20. The thicker oils may not hurt the engine too much ordinarily, but they have a delayed circulation time in cool weather. This can cause lack of lube on overhead cam engines and damage camshafts and valve train.

It also turns out that the greatest benefit of pressurized oil in engines has been its ability to cool bearings. This, of course, takes a high flow rate to be most effective.

There is old wives tales still circulating around how thick oil can cushion bearings. Any modern day bearings that need "cushioning" are basically shot, usually galled by overheating, since the old, slow thick oils often failed at proper cooling. A bonus, fast flowing oil lasts longer now that it is not overheated by exposure lag under high heat stress. Oil thickens from heat as it ages and does not do as good a job cooling bearings. This thickening is one of the reasons automatic transmissions need frequent replacement lube, especially after abuse. Synthetic oils led the way to oils and blends that now resist thinkening.

Some of this knowledge became evident when it was noted how well automatic transmissions avoided wear with thin oils and how sensitive they were to cooling. This is opposed to manual transmissions that used to often use 90 weight gear lube, many of which now also use thinner oils.

Another user of Mobil 1 oils (30+ years). While the 5w-20 is probably fine in most applications, a MH sees a lot higher loading than most PU's, SUV's and cars. I suspect that Ford wanted a "standard" oil across their "standard" engines.

However, it is interesting to note that that Ford does recommend a 5w-50 oil in some of their supercharged Mustang engines.

I've used 15w-50 in mine without issues, but have now standardized all my vehicles and engines (15+) on their 5w-40 oil. It may cost me a 0.1 or 0.2 mpg, but I feel a lot better with my foot on the floor pulling my toad up a long grade.

My manual also calls for 5W20. I've been using conventional because I change the oil every 3750 miles (twice per 7500-mile cycle). I'm thinking about switching to synthetic, though, and going to a 7500-mile interval.

I would do what the mfgr calls for in oil weight.

Another vote for Mobile 1 Syn, 5W-30.

My explorer started with 0W20 from the factory, but has graduated to 5 or 10W30 Mobil-1 in its older age. It's way happier.

All of our Triton engines in ENG news vans are running 10W30 Mobil-1, and are Class C weight in city traffic 15+ hrs/day.

There will surely be those coming along to start the Dino argument... ignore 'em. Use what YOU like.

I use NAPA 5W20 or 30 just like the book says. I change it every 6 or 8000 miles. It has 180,000 and only uses about 1/2 qt between oil changes so I never add any.

My 2012 MH Ford owners manual call for 5w20 except for extreme cold winters then its says get back to Florida. Motorcraft blended 5w20 in 5qt jug is a bargain at Wallyworld. New engines these days have much closer tolerances and don't need thick oil.

Amsoil 5w-20 long-life, good for 25,000 miles. Also Amsoil long-life filter. I carry a case of oil, top it off as necessary (a quar every 1500 miles or so), and get a complete oil and filter change at about a year, which is usually only about 6,000 miles. Being lazy, I figure anything that prolongs the interval is good . . .

What year is your MH? I run 5W20 in the winter and 5W30 in the summer. I tried 5W20 in the summer once towing my TT. When I went to start it the next day it clattered for about 2 seconds until the oil pressure built up. The 5W20 gets so thin when it's hot it's like water. The oil will all drain down because it's so thin! I never have that problem with 5W30.

I'de run 5W30 with how hard the engine has to work.

Different weights of oil shouldn't be mixed.

Motor oil and gear lube are both oils and will mix together also...........

Thanks LVJ58. Gonna top it off and head to coos bay, or

You shouldn't "top it off" with a different weight of oil than what's already in it. If you don't know what's in it, then change it.

Bill

And why not? It will mix right in.
