newer vs lower mileage

All other things being about equal.... is a person better off buying (for example)

1) a 8 yr old Class B with 60,000 miles

or

2) a 12 yr old class B with 30,000 miles
Single empty-nester in Middle TN, sometimes with a friend or grandchild on board

No it's not. We've seen one or two instances of that in our 2014--but they've been small things, not significant systems-related things. The latter are all generally better.

Btw, I could be wrong about this but 12 years ago I think they were all cloth upholstered--at least the two 05's I've seen were, where by 8 years ago they were the leatherette--which is great stuff, and doesn't hold odors.

Agree. 8 year old unit. 60 K is just 'broken in' for a gas rig and hardly used for the diesel! I checked out 2014 PW Plateau and difference was mainly the bigger fridge.Still no screens and no pantry.Groan. My search continues.

The older unit is going to be much less expensive for all of the reasons listed here. If you are into DIY, I'd buy the older, low mileage vehicle, update tires, hoses, the rest of the stuff that goes bad. Yes, you might have to deal with not having the latest and greatest and you might have to fix stuff, but you have a lot of saved money to handle it. I don't think there is necessarily a "right" answer to this question.

My parents were like that. My minivan just passed 200K miles (and is more reliable now than any car I have ever owned). Our SUV and TV has about 130K - it is also amazingly reliable, but after the minivan, I just sort of expect cars to be that good. Both are Toyotas - older models.



I'm driving my 4th Toyota and would take a lot of convincing to buy anything else for a personal vehicle. If Toyota sold a full-size van in the US I would buy one in a heartbeat to custom-build my own class B.

I traded on a 2005 Pleasure-way Plateau at 61,000 miles and doing the same with our 2011 Great West Van Legend at 65,000 miles but not because of the mileage. Both were in excellent shape and mileage was not the reason. My reasons are my changing desires and quest for newer designs to try. If I could have remodeled my Bs for what I was seeking I would have done so. In some respects the 60,000 mile mark was a sad goodbye because those diesel engines were improving.

My thinking is leaning towards the newer although higher mileage unit, for all the reasons given above.

All "other" things are never equal and both mileage and age change that inequality no matter what it appears - like tires I cited for instance.

I doubt there are any warranty considerations for anything 8 and 12 years old.

In Class Bs there have been significant improvements in quality in the past decade. The 8 year old B falls within those improvements. If it were a Pleasure-way the simple improvement of intelligent battery charging would have occurred just 8 years ago. Winnebago didn't figure that out until 2014.

To me though, it is clear since it was asked. 8 years is always better than 12 because that 60,000 miles is not that significant for a Class B.

What's the difference in price?. A $10k difference may change people's minds.I could buy belts and hoses. Change fluids. Fix systems etc... and have a 30,000 mile rig. I assume there is no warranty left on the 80,000 mile rig. If not then the drive trains start out even with no warranty. I'd rather have the$10k in my pocket for catastrophic occurrences.
