Other options for Class A DP service

I need to get my tranny serviced and have the cooling system serviced. I've always gone to the Freightliner Service Center in the past for this type of work, but was wondering if there are better options out there. Freightliner tends to be very expensive for just regular service needs. I just took it to a SpeedCo for an oil change, but that is about the limit of what SpeedCo does. What do others do for tranny service and other items like that?
  • Some Pilot and Flying-J truck stops have an 'in-and-out' garage for fluid service etc. Get the Allstays app for your phone and that should list where service is available

    Try a local truck garage.

That is exactly what I was going to say. When we moved to our present location 7 years ago, I needed a place for the MH to be serviced. About a mile from the house I saw a place that had everything from school busses, to backhoes, to MHs, to classic cars... Labor rate is reasonable and techs are knowledgeable. They keep a computer file on the MH. When I show up for scheduled work, they already have filters, etc. on hand.

School busses are always a good sign. School districts look for best prices and considering the liability of transporting children the shop isn't going to cut corners.
  • I can only tell you were not to go

Gabrielli truck sales and service in Milford CT.
  • MSmith,

If it's convenient, I would use Redlands RV Truck and Performance Center in Redlands, CA. I had consistent excellent work from them when I had the Dynasty. Do not go to Colton Truck, I had to take the Dynasty to Redlands Truck to get them to fix what Colton Truck messed up.

    Good luck,

  • Even though I store my Sahara at the local RV shop, I went looking for another option for service (local RV shop charges $140/hour shop rate). The local truck service place has a terrible reputation. I found another diesel truck repair place, but they wanted nothing to do with motor homes, and it seems they're not alone. Truck service shops are not used to having to keep the work area clean and some don't want to deal with the extra work to do so.

I had some CAT specific work done at the local CAT shop and while it was there I had them service the engine and chassis, but they wouldn't do the extra stuff, like replacing zerk fittings. I had them do the valve lash adjustment and filters and belts.

Luckily, because I store the rig at the local RV shop, I can wait for service to get the winter rate, but it's still expensive.
  • I have looked at local truck shops a couple of times, but as mentioned my concern was most are fairly dirty and I was worried about coming back and finding grease and oil all tracked through the motorhome. At the Freightliner dealership, they sure so keep the place clean. I have never had problems with them dirtying up the motorhome, but I guess that's also why you pay more to take it there. I'll look around and see if I can find a good truck repair place, but in the end I'll probably end up back at Freightliner anyway.

That's about 400 miles away. An 800 mile round trip would eat up in savings in repair costs. But I may be taking a trip to Redlands in May so I could make it a camping trip and take the RV down.
  • Yeah as the others have said, check around to local shops. Many mechanics will take that on no problem.
