Removable Awning

I have stakes to tie down with. I used 12" garden spikes, drilled a hole near the top and attached a round key ring.



This ring will also hold the pole as well as the tie down. Especially if I want to put the poles on an angle. By scavenging the other two poles I have one or two other sections to add for the angle. Two extra lengths, pictured below, seem to be a bit to drastic, might be better suited to use only one more length.

Looks really good. Are the 2 poles enough to keep it from taking off in the wind?

Finally got it done.
I bought the awning from Gander Mountain. Wally worked had a cheaper one ($29.00), but were out of stock/discontinued. Gander Mountain wanted $69 and on sale for $49, but on the web for $39. The local store honored the web price so I bought it.
As dumb luck would have it the size was perfect to reach from one O-ring to the other on the penthouse top with carabiners. The carabiners I found in a close-out bin at our local grocery store attached to bottles of hand sanitizer for $.25 each.





DW sewed on a couple of patches with velcro strips that align with the other two center O-rings on the penthouse top.



The carabiners and the velcro strips provide a secure fit to the top and are easy on and off.



And using only two of the provided poles it makes for a simple awning.



That's my easy removable awning. Haven't field tested it yet, nor even tried it in rain. But we want it more for sun/shade. Don't plan on using it during a heavy down pour. I know that with domed roof channeling the rain down into the open doors is an concern of many, but I feel that this should work. If it doesn't, I work on addendum A (what ever that may be).

Heh. I went to a pro shop specialising in fasteners, didn't find the lightweight 'biner I wanted for my cat's harness, then scavenged one off a cloth grocery sack. So I know just what you mean!

Found the clips/carabiners I wanted to attach the canopy to the "O" rings on the penthouse top, and of all places at our local grocery store! Actually they were selling small hand sanitizer bottles that had carabiners to attach to you purse, belt, what ever. Perfect size I wanted and at a regular price of $1.00, but on clearance of $0.25.
Just made my day. Now if I can get the DW, the seamstress, in gear and sew the velcro strips, we should be go to go!

I got my poles from Walmart. 2 in a pack for $35 simple friction adjust. Worked brilliantly.

I haven't tried my removable awning yet. Sure hope it works. Got a 12X12 waterproof nylon and I'm going to attach it to my rain gutter with small metal clamps. Know that won't be the prettiest but I have very little storage. I priced the Kelty brand aluminum adjustable pole. Has 3 sections so easy to store. BUT it's $40 for one. Still a lot cheaper than installing an awning. Like I said, hope it works because I'll be on the move through the winter on the western coast and know I'll have rain

I don't foresee this as an issue for a couple of reasons: a, the canopy I chose, link, has a minimal dome. b, the edge will be well under the penthouse top of our SportsMobile and a couple of inches inward of the side doors and rain gutter. c, I plan on having the canopy slant forward enough to minimalize the dome effect enough so minimal rain shed runs towards the doors/drip rail and will be adjustable for such conditions. d, don't plan on using it during heavy rain nor storms. e, the slight dome allows me to easily open the side doors with out rubbing the top.
I can only give this a try and adapt from there.
