Replace ignition Switch

Has anyone replaced their Motor home ignition switch? Is the lock and switch separable? Does the lock and switch come as a single unit? My 15 year old switch (2004 National/Freightliner)has rotated about 90 degrees and more and more some of the relays don't pick up every time. Frequently I must start several times to get all accessories powered...wipers, jacks, blower etc.

My problem may well be old sticky relays. When new, my key was vertical when on, now its horizontal. Not really a problem but it is just a symptom.

Great response. Thank you. I do have the the recessed Chrome switch with the small hole. I'll follow Doug's procedure at the next maintenance opportunity. Also have a couple of new relays on order.

Love this forum for this kind of knowledge bank.

He stated Freightliner, which does NOT supply the key switch back then. They used the GM type Ignition cylinder. Doug

We replaced the one in our 2011 Monaco. It was in the dash. Oce I identified it was a vintage GM ignition switch, I ordered it on Amazon for about $30. Searching youtube showed how to replace. Basically involves removing the chrome ring, putting the key in, turning to a certain point. Inserting a paperclip into a small hole to press a deeply recessed button, turning the key farther and then the whole thing came out. Pretty much rverse to install. Took all of 10 minutes.

Our Monaco has lots of vintage GM parts (vents, headlight switch, etc.)

This particular one was the prototype.

If you have the chrome recessed Ignition assbly that has the old style GM key. There is a hole beside where the key inserts. You insert the key and use a paperclip to push in and that releases the tumbler. You rotate slightly to pull the key and lock cylinder OUT. Once that happens you can unscrew the outer chrome bezel from the inside ignition assbly. Now, once that happens you will see the quick connect of the ignition harness and you disconnect that. Pay attention to the condition of the spade terminals to make sure they are not burnt or pitted. On both the wire harness feed and the old ignition lock. Doug

Rotate the switch back to its original position and tighten it up.
Maybe remove it and check the wires.

Call me if you wish.
