Take the direct tv receiver out of the spare bedroom. It doesn't know it's going for a ride to fun places.
I've been doing the same thing for years, setting up a portable dish wherever I ended up. I had Dish Network for a couple of years and it took considerably longer to find the satellites, than the normal few minutes or less that it takes to find the Direct TV satellite. Of course if you get too far from home (200 miles or so?) you lose your home area major networks, and can't pick up the local major networks where you are. I just use the roof antenna to pick up the local major networks wherever I am.
I've yet to try getting HDTV on the road with Direct TV. It took forever to get the right satellites at home when replacing my standard dish with an HD dish.
