sealing seams

Many of the vertical seams on the exterior of my Class C have accumulated black "gunk" from years on the road. In a few locations it looks like there's some gaps which need to be filled.

My plan is to remove the existing caulk, using a plastic scraper, clean out the residue with mineral spirits, and apply new caulk/sealant.

Two questions:

1. What sealant is appropriate for this use? I'm also replacing some exterior marker lighting fixtures... can the same sealant be used for this? I'm thinking that some ordinary white silicone caulk would do, but perhaps there's something else I should use for this application?

2. Should the caulk be applied with a "bead" so that it's raised up a bit over the surfaces, or should it be smoothed into place with a finger as it's applies?

Anything else I should be thinking about?
  • Don't use silicone. Once you apply silicone nothing will stick to it, including more silicone.

Use something like Dicor No Sag on the vertical surfaces.

Dicor self leveling is for roof repairs.
  • DO NOT USE SILICON, do not even walk by your RV with silicone in your hand!

For vertical seams I like OSI Quad available Home Depot, lowes and such, a solvent based caulk, similar to Dicor but much cheaper. For large areas on roof I like Dicor self leveling lap sealant.

There are bunches of Videos on line about sealing an RV, worth the time to look at a few. Jim
