Selling a Prevost Across State Lines

My closest friend lost his battle with liver disease two months ago.

He was a traveling evangelist and owned a newer Prevost bus on a Freightliner chassis.

His widow has asked me to help sell the bus.

The bus is titled in Louisiana and I live in Texas.

If I move the vehicle to Texas, then market and sell the bus on her behalf, with the transaction occurring exclusively between the buyer that would be in Texas, and the seller that would be in Louisiana, does this represent a taxable event that otherwise would not occur if it were left physically in Louisiana?

I agree with the consignment approach...but given that, why do it in Texas?

Help the widow find a good consignment ave in Louisana, might be much simpler.

I have to agree with the consignment option. I can think of several knowledgeable dealers in the east Texas area that are good with consignments. Put the right price on that coach and it should go quickly.

While I think it is admirable for the OP to want to help out the widow of his late friend, that is probably not going to be enough. Selling any Class A, especially a higher end model, even though it is a 1999 model, is going to take someone with specialized knowledge.

Any prospective buyer is going to have a bunch of questions about the bus, they are going to want detailed info about the different systems, water, electric, generator, heating, cooling, cooking, refrigerator, etc. To get the widow a fair/reasonable price for her bus, the person handling the sale is going to have to be knowledgeable about Prevost buses and their converters.

Whine has given you one name, also consider putting the widow in touch with PPLmotorhomes.com in Houston, Prevost-stuff.com on line, and any other dealers that sell Class A units. I would also check with Berryland Rv in Louisiana on Interstate 10, to see if they handle consignments of buses.

To really help the widow out, I would strongly recommend the OP advise her to turn the matter over to a professional to get it sold. The OP could stay involved by helping her screen prospective dealers/brokers but then let the professionals do their job. If the OP owned a Prevost himself or was intimately acquainted with Prevost conversions, then that would be a different story, but that isn't indicated to be the case.

Have to agree with the OP here.....how many on here had to tell him it wasn't a Prevost on a Freightliner chassis? To the OP, don't let the miserable ones get you down, your doing a Good Deed to help out.

Mr Oliver bus sales takes Prevost and other high end RVs to sell on consignment. If the widow needs the money fast, he will also buy. He is an honest dealer, bought my Prevost there in 2010. He knows RVs and has much better marketing resources that you do, will get more money from the sale that you could.

So, a 1999 is a newer model? Go figure that out.

The purchaser will pay the tax to wherever they register the vehicle.

I believe it would be a taxable event to the buyer and the state he or she lives in when they register it. There is no such thing as a Prevost on a Freightliner chassis.

First, if it's a Prevost, it's on a Prevost chassis which was made in Canada and converted to a MH by a company usually in the US.
Do not see what difference where the MH is located as long as the sale is between the widow and the new purchaser. Sales tax is determined by what state the purchaser titles it in.

Don't know the answer to your legal question, but Prevost busses are not on Freightliner chassis's. They are a unibody Prevost shell and are made in Canada.
