Spare Tire....How many of you carry one?

I have a spare but it is heavy. I need to weigh it but probably around 70#. I have to carry it in a storage compartment and it takes up quite a bit of space.

I know having a spare tire is essential if a flat tire happens, but.......

That being said, in my Class C, GVWR is at a premium. I'd rather have that 70# be used for other items.

I also don't like to have to carry it in one of my storage compartments. Its big bulky, and awkward to lift.

How many of you carry a spare?

Where is it carried?

Have any of you built a spare tire carrier UNDER the rear of your Class C?

I've not heard anyone else in these forums ever mention that their spare was carried carried this way - I assume that's the place Ford intended for it to be on their E350 and E450 chassis. Does anyone else have their Class C spare in this place?

This from the 3rd post above yours.

My Ford E450 chassis does not have a factory one installed underneath behind rear axle. I would like to install one in that location. Are they available from Ford or another source?

Weighing 70 Lbs against the safety and security of having a spare Tire seems to be a no brainer :S Along with all the other things the others have brought up.
Mine is in the rear compartment, bolted up to the rear wall.I would never leave home with out one.

Going without the spare would be very ill advised. I remounted my from the rear bumper to an under-the-frame mount, right behind the axle. Bought the mounting kit on Amazon for something like $150, was easy to install and works great. Obviously, you're still carrying the weight though.

I am changing our classic coach from 16.5 to 16 a pair at a time. Right now, 16.5s are not always easy to get, so I will carry a spare until I have no 16.5s left. After that, I will think about it. The spare is on a rear mount and never in the way.

Winnebago thoughtfully supplied one with our Class C bolted to the rear of our RV taking up no space. In an equally thoughtful manner Michelin replaced our spare at no cost in a recall. My tire changing days are behind me but it is nice to have one available if ever needed.

I would not leave home without a spare and all of the requisite tools necessary to safely change it out (Bottle jack, jack stand, lug and torque wrenches, compressor etc.). The shoulder of an interstate or highway is just about the most dangerous place you will ever be. Cops refer to it as the "DeadZone" with good reason.

When you have a flat/blowout even if you cannot change the tire yourself having that spare will enable the first responding tow truck or good samaritan to do so dramatically reducing your time in the "zone".

If you have no spare ERS{when they finally arrive - it can be hours if at all}, will be happy to sell you one for a ridiculously inflated price, "if" they can find the right tire (think being in East Tree Stump, Iowa late on a Sunday afternoon). Meanwhile you will be sitting in the zone hoping no one plows into your rig.

I initially used a bumper mount for our spare but after hitting every pothole between Tucson And Maine the bracket fractured. Fortunately we were passings through Elkhart a couple of weeks later and I stopped at the Nexus factory and had them install a custom mount, welded to the chassis, under the rear of the coach.

As always.... Opinions and YMMV.

Tire, jack & lug wrench. The difference is between waiting a few hours to change or do it myself in 15 minutes

Winnebago supplied one with my MH. It is mounted at the rear of the large rear storage bay at the rear of the MH, out of the way. If I ever have to use it, I will have to completely empty that bay, but that is not a problem.

Mine is attached to an OEM mount on the rear of the RV. That would otherwise be waste space.
