Tag Axle Settings

Our new (to us) 43' Beaver Marquis Emerald has a tag axle so I have a question on the best setting.

I stopped at a closed weigh station yesterday and got the following with a full tank of fuel and 50 gallons of water:

Front axle--- 12,950
Tag Axle---- 9,250
Drive Axle--- 15,000

The axle ratings are:

Front 14,000
Rear 23000
Tag 10,800

The tag has 40 psig of air pressure and I figure (within reason) the air pressure vs. load is a linear relationship.

With this info, what would be the optimum wt distribution. From that I can than set the tire pressures in my Toyo 117Z 12RX22.5 tires.

Thanks for any input.
  • Look like the tag pressure needs to be lowered a little. I would keep the same proportion as the ratings.

Way too much weight on the tag. I would want the drive closer to 20K for better braking (4 tires). I would decrease the tag's air pressure to 30. This will decrease the front down to 12,000. The 12's on the tag will have a minimum of 70 to keep the tire on the rim. I would go 5 over the 75 needed on the drive axle and 95 on the fronts. These pressures are for 12K on front, 20K on drive, and 5200 on the tag. These pressures are from a Goodyear chart and doubt the Toyo will be much different.
It's easy to put 2K of stuff in it if you are FT so you may end up with 100/85/70 for your pressures.
When I replaced my tires I went with 11R22.5 Hankooks on the rear as they are the same diameter as the 295's that came on the coach. Went with 315's on the front as I'm heavier than you.
  • 23,000 lbs doesn't sound right as axle GAWR is limited to 20,000. What is the GAWR on the ID sticker?
  • Just keep in mind, that when you increase tag axle pressure, it puts more weight on the front. Releasing pressure on the tag will lower the front weight as the weight will be transferred to the drive axle.

I think our tag is set at about 38 lbs. (2008 Monaco Dynasty 42 ft.). We weighed 40,039 lbs. at our last weigh-in.

    MM.

Nope double checked and the GAWR for the drive is indeed 23,000 lbs.

Thanks, that is sort of what I had thought. If I drop to 30 psig that should drop the tag load by 2500 lbs or so. Right now I'm running 105 front and 95 in drive and tag tires...I tend to error on the safety side. For the time being I'll keep those pressures until I can find another weigh station that I can use.
