The 35 year old Corsair strikes again

Family week-end out. Friday was fine but Saturday morning we get up and see a puddle of water under the hot water heater. You know where this is going. Needless to say water was shut off and disconnected. We were at a campground so no need for any running water when it's available all over. Get home today and the floor is all fine, only issue is the hot water tank. We've never used the heater so right now I have a fan drying the area out. Tomorrow it's off to the RV store to buy some fittings to bypass the heater. If they don't have any there then I'll go next door to the fastener place.
One thing we were all happy for this week-end, AC blows c c c ccold

Happy camping, we're off to do the same next week-end
  • You should be able to bypass the water heater without adding any fittings at all to the present rig. They are designed to be bypassed so that winterizing pink antifreeze will not get into them.

Any number of things might have gone wrong. Most likely, if you were connected to camp site water is their pressure might have been too high and either the safety, or the drain plug or one of the fittings might have leaked.

Dry up around your heater, and put fresh dry paper towels around each possible source of water and see if you can isolate by seeing what towel gets wet and where it is leaking. It might just need tightening, or even a new safety valve.
  • x2 on going to the hardware store first. They will have what you need and probably be a little cheaper.
Consider Pex and SharkBite Fittings. It will make the job quicker and easier.
  • "Tomorrow it's off to the RV store to buy some fittings to bypass the heater" Try your local hardware store first, maybe closer and quite possibly cheaper.
